ArousedNinja Haha I'll take that last part as a compliment. Maybe I just lack the ability to identify other emotions but ever since I discovered what I wanted to do with my life I found myself incapable of not being excited in whatever way about the things I do on a daily basis. I think even that can be considered a charming way of describing a crazy person, oh snap. And yeah I agree with everything you said and can perfectly relate, it is a broad subject though. I'm still trying to read up on this, it's hard, there are a bazillion sources.

smlak I hear you. I've since been leaning away from the views from my last post. Mainly because I've noticed that a lot of "sad" or even depressive (supposedly) songs actually make me happy and vice versa. So it's really not that simple, as you pointed out. And also, people usually listen certain type of music when they are in a corresponding emotional state (angry -> thrash metal, rock or something heavier), and that music seems to help relieve those emotions somewhat (at least in my case). Maybe this is again one of those matters that vary greatly with every individual. Btw, do you really have just two emotions? That's weird! But you definitely seem like an interesting person :)

ArousedNinja Wow my reply is almost one year late, I'm pretty sure this is a new record for me. What you said sounds plausible but here's one more thing that makes me doubt it's as simple as that. Personally I know only two emotions, anger and euphoria. They seem to be both equally productive to me, it's probably also because I'm mostly hyper and I'm never bored or melancholic but I enjoy both and am capable of the same things. Maybe this is too subjective to even be considered an argument. Also I think I read somewhere that subliminal messages are far more effective than apparent things like violent lyrics in a metal song. Like it has to be tricky to get to you subconsciously.

smlak Yeah, I've been thinking about this for awhile now. A little example: Let's say you listen to a song (whether on radio, club, pc) many times enough to memorise the lyrics. And then let's say that song's stuck in your head for 3 days straight. I'd guess how you feel and view the world around you is different if that song was happy-go-lucky style with optimistic and positive lyrics, than if you listened to doom metal with lyrics about losing your loved ones and shit like that. Just as negative and positive thoughts affect your state differently, imagine those thoughts are the lyrics repeating in your head. And then add accompanying instrumentals to multiple the effect. That would be like the effect which thoughts have on you, only doubled. At least that would seem logical to me :)

ArousedNinja Dope idea. I think this is true, although it's hard to define, when music affects you positively and when it doesn't. For example there are many musicians I listen to just for the lyrics even if the music is bad, and vice versa. I honestly couldn't tell you whether or not any of those affect me in a good way.
