    Music as state training

Music has the ability to stir variety of emotions, thoughts and states of consciousness in us, thus it would perhaps qualify as state training. Or at least as a tool to explore how specific states arise in us. Some musical pieces can even put the listener into heightened states of consciousness.

What are some of the songs that cause nonordinary states to arise within you?

    Here's personal examples:

Saul Williams - Coded Language (Evokes what Andrew Cohen calls Authentic Self)

Johann Sebastian Bach - Toccata & Fugue (Just something far out..)

Stuart Davis - Fear of Light (Magnifies the contrast between ego and pure being)

Enya - Caribbean Blue (Blissful relaxation)

  • I second Saul Williams - Coded Language

Off of the top of my head,

    Huun-Huur-Tu - Tuvan Internationale
(it sounds otherworldly and has this mind over matter vibe)

    Faithless - Mass Destruction
    (mostly because of the lyrics)

    Brahms - Hungarian Dance No.5
(this is the first and only piece that actually made me cry because it was like mathematical perfection to my ears. Björk also said that music is mathematical, people think it's chaotic when really it's quite organised, especially when it has major effects on you)

    Vivaldi - Four Seasons (Winter)
(same thing like with the one by Brahms)

    Mitsoura - Devat Ku
(this one is similar to Huun-Huur-Tu, I realised just now that it's probably because both languages seem so strange and alien that it just has to be magical to me)

I'll see if I can find the songs you mentioned, I'm curious if any of the others will do it for me since we have Coded Language in common.

Haha and I think the word you were looking for is extraordinary. That was cute.

Extraordinary works fine, thank you :)

I definitely agree on Faithless (funny I actually heard it couple of weeks ago for the first time).

    Agreed also on Four Seasons.

Speaking of classical music, it was probably the first time I've cried to music when I heard this one live:

Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D major

Also Chopin's Nocturnes get me in pretty farout states.

I'll try to find those songs you mentioned as well.
And I urge you to listen to the Bach piece I mentioned (if you can find better quality, please ignore the youtube version):
