    Who's your favorite?

    Well?

Who is your favorite instrumental artist?

For me, hands down it is Mogwai.

Saxon Shore is probably my second favorite, but their style has changed a lot and I really liked their second album best, Four Months Of Darkness. Their latest stuff has sounded too generic, to me. But they were the band that got me into instrumental music in the first place. I saw them live once by accident, and decided to buy their CD. Good idea.

I saw Mogwai live, before I had really listened to them, because I was invited and everything changed. Seeing their show made me feel as euphoric as seeing Saxon Shore did. They are bliss live and bliss in my headphones! Woohoo!

Hmmm, I think Id have to agree....it was Mogwai and Godspeed that initially got me into it :D

Mogwai are playing in Edinburgh at the end of next month, and despite living in Glasgow Im tempted to head through and see them. Id have tickets and digs booked already if I had enough spare cash :(

I'm going to have to be extremely cliché and say "Sigur Rós" and "Godspeed You! Black Emperor".

  • Sigur ros started it, but mogwai sealed it.

*and so ends another pointless comment
  • Well, it would be Don't mess with Texas, they're from Croatia, where I'm coming from too, so I don't know how much familiar the non-Croats are with them. I also like Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Godspeed you black emperor.

i'm really liking caspian at the moment, but i don't really have a set favorite.

  • Im too fickle to set one band as my out-and-out favourite,It tends to change with the seasons.

At the moment its Do Make Say Think.

In the winter it will probably revert back to Mogwai or Saxon Shore.

All the world's in a rush to be beautiful.

i dont think anyone will ever top Explosions In The Sky for me. i mean, there might be other artists that are just more powerful, or more moving, but Eits were the first post rock band i ever got into, that ever made me really feel and connect with music, that i really almost broke out in tears seeing them live (not just because i was sad, it was a whole mix of emotions), that really just bring everything to the table for me. there latest effort isnt as good as all there previous stuff, but still to me there #1.

  • Kaki King and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. They're the two different poles of good instrumental music for me.

I've been exposed to tons of primarily instrumental music for a long time, with my parents playing for me Spyro Gyra and other jazzy instrumental artists. I love Sigur Ros, even though there are vocals, because Jonsi's voice is just another instrument to me. Explosions In The Sky are amazing, as is Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and so is Mogwai. Tortoise is pretty good too. I really like Pelican, because I honestly can't stand most metal vocals. Right now, my favorite instrumental band is The Evpatoria Report. Their music seems so straightforward to me, like they didn't need a lot of post-production work; they just sat down, played a song, and there it is on the album. They also have acoustic guitar strumming in one of their songs (Cosmic Call), which I believe is a first (at least for me) in a post-rock track.

  • definitely Godspeed You! Black Emperor

"You won't find it in the dictionary"
  • im glad i came across the bands that actually got me into postrock/instrumental rock

but now i def listen to the smaller instrumental bands

    hammock
    russian circles
    a northern chorus
    god is an astronaut
    grails
    gregor samsa
    bell orchestre
    caspian

    etc, etc, etc

  • explosions in the sky started me out along with mum, mogwai, m83, godspeed you! black emperor, sigur ros, the album leaf...broken social scene sort of counts, four tet.

It's hard to chose one, but if I need to, I think, I would chose Godspeed You! BLack Emperorat first place, but Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Rós, M83, and more that you all know are also very good.

Definitely have to show my love for Eluvium. By far my favorite instrumental artist. He's my hero. Keith Fullerton Whitman comes in close second.

Nobody said MONO! I'm confused by this. I find they definitely top Explosions in the sky. My long time favorite was Mogwai, perhaps recently surpassed by Sigur Ros with the release of Takk, although their older stuff is just as good, favorite being Ny Batteri.

definitely Landing. they are not strictly instrumental, there are some occasional lyrics. but i'd still throw them in the 'instrumental' bucket.
of the artists that are more or less strictly instrumental I'd go with Epic45 and Max Richter

some things i just don't want to know.
