-If you want to advertise your group, please could you do it via the group shout box or by asking me to put a link on the main group page? Individual threads on the forum really aren't necessarily, especially if your group isn't even related to old music.

-Lively discussions and debates are tolerated, but please try not to slag off other members' favourite bands by saying "-insert band name here- are crap" and leaving it at that. If you want to criticise a band, then give reasons.

I'd like to have been born in 1970. Then as a young kid, I could have been introduced to 70s punk. I would spend my teenage years listening to the cool music coming out of the Btiitsh, American and Australian punk undergrounds in the 80s. Then in my early twenties, I would be listening to grunge.

In a sense the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little attention to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as one can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for free for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply publicize what the music business wants to make money with.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.

Born in the wrong decade? Maybe, but at least now I can feel proud that I'm keeping the good music alive and sharing with as many as I can. "I'm Not Down".

Oh no, if I had been born decades ago, I would be old and wasted by now. Music, however, never grows old.

You people are so wrong. With all respect to the dead and gone classics, I believe it is now that music's entering the golden age. Today's musicians have many times the resources of the past generations, and I don't see our spirits grow any dumber either. Personally, I look forward to hear (and hopefully contribute to) what the fully grown Internet bred generation will yield! Hey, wasn't it the great Frank Zappa who said that the world may well, among other things, end in nostalgia? Quit whining...
