    i need a record player

    yeah, so my 'rents 30+ year old record player (there's no brand name on it, so i've nothing to comparison shop with) just bite the dust...and i've no clue what to look for when buying a new one (as it was the only one i've ever used)..any suggestions? i'm not looking to spend a fortune but i'm a bit skeptical of the $75 dollar cd-cassete-lp players they're selling at wal-mart and target these days. i guess i need some damn speakers now too...any help would be great. thanks

    I'd spend at least 200 to 250 dollars on your deck, add another 150 dollars for your cart. Cheap or old needles or badly set up decks fuck up your vinyl really quickly. If you're getting speakers, you'll need an amp as well...

    See how much moolah you can rustle up in total; biggest expenditure should be your amp and speakers, as everything will be coming through it. Next get a nice deck, the less frills the better. Numark and Vestax do ok budget ones these days and are pretty easy to find.

    Sorry- this is probably no help!

    technics 1200 or 1210 far as i'm concerned there are no others

  • get yourself some used stuff. you can get real hifi components instead of new chinaware.

    rigth now i have a Dual 1019 i got for 100 bucks (with new cartridge)
    (not mine)

    my favourite would be a Sansui SR 929

    but they are expensive ;_;

    Get a belt driven used one. Rega, Project even Linn (the first brands that come to mind) may be found for not too much bucks :)

  • Get a Numark PT01 on the side. Not great for standard listening but it's portable and you can tote it anywhere you wanna go. Runs off of batteries and has a USB interface so you can rip your vinyl to MP3. Numark's got a number of other portable players as well. Vestex makes some good ones as well. Portability wins if you're wanting to listen to the records while in store or at a convention but otherwise go w/ some 1200's
