    Anyone like classic horror?

Old school shit like Psycho and early German Expressionist films? Personally, the lack of colour increases my fear in watching. Discuss!

there are 2 or 3 nosferatu
1st is black and white, soundless film (also there are many legends about this film)
2nd was a black and white (with sound) and 3rd is a film about the film (it makes the assumption that the actor playing in the old film was a real vampire, which is a legend about it)

  • I grew up on Hammer horror, and one of the best was a film called "The Creeping Flesh", starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Another was a film i caught on a cable channel late one night, I have not seen it anywhere since and only found out what it was called fairly recently.
It was called "The beast in the Cellar" and starred Beryl Reid and Flora Robson as two batty old women with a secret in the cellar of their cottage.

Of course any film with Vincent Price is also brilliant by default!

"If our society seems more nihilistic than that of previous eras, perhaps this is simply a sign of our maturity as a sentient species. As our collective consciousness expands beyond a crucial point, we are at last ready to accept life's fundamental truth: that life's only purpose is life itself."
  • Classics horror are great, i started to watch horrors from classics. "Rosemary's Baby", "Night Of The Living Dead", "The Shining", "A Nightmare On Elm Street", "Psycho" - masterpieces.

  • No doubt I will be called a heretic now, but I watched the Exorcist for the first time a couple of months ago, and I can honestly say it was completely and totally awful.

It was slow to start, boring, not in the slightest bit scary, and so bad it was almost funny in parts.

Maybe demonic possession and Ouija boards are just not scary to an atheist, although I have a watched horror film that left me genuinely unnerved and jumpy, (its called Session 9, I urge you to watch it, its one of the best).

I love old black and white horror films. So, Nosferatu is a favourite. And also Carnival of souls, Phantom of the opera and films like that. I also love Dario Argento's movies from the 70's...

  • Speaking of old stuff , you guys should try and see Begotten :)

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Begotten is a 1991 Experimental/horror film, directed and written by E. Elias Merhige.
The film heavily deals with religion and the biblical story of earth creation. But as Merhige revealed during Q&A sessions, its primary inspiration was a near death experience he had when he was 19, after a car crash. The film features no dialogue, but rather uses harsh and uncompromising images of human pain and suffering to tell its tale.

I've seen it 2 times , and it's really disturbing not having any dialogue and being black&white with every frame re-photographed , it gives it an eerie feeling ...

  • I agree. Begotten is one fucked up movie. Also, i love old horror movies. I think black and white lends a greater feel and atmosphere to films than colour does, Has anyone seen The Haunting?? Its a 1970 movie and one of the best horror movies ever in my opinion. There's great use of suspense and shadows and mounting tension. The whole film doesn't show a single drop of blood. Its also got an excellent score. The music in horror movies is one of the most important things. Movies like Psycho, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, The Shining have unparalleled scores. Even Vertigo, although its mystery film rather than a horror film.

I'm also very interested in old horror movies.. I liked Hitchcocks Psycho and I still try to see the first black/white horror movies.. but you have to see most movies in their original tone, because the German sound is sooooo awful in most cases... especially in old movies.

I think that the ongoing appeal of The Exorcist is not the concept of demonic possession (which used to be genuinely scary but isn't now) but the jump scenes.

I saw this wino, he was eating grapes. I was like, dude, you have to wait.

SURE! I looooove the classics! 80's was the best decade :D
A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th, Halloween, The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, Child's Play, Sleepaway Camp, Fright Night, Lost Boys, Monster Squad, Happy Birthday to Me, He Knows You're Alone, Madhouse, Silent Night Deadly Night, Hide & Go Shriek, The Funhouse, Maniac Cop, Mother's Day, Evil Dead, Clownhouse, The Stuff, Critters & much more! <3

  • Yeah, pretty much the only horror films worth my time.

All the good music has already been written by people with wigs and stuff.

I've seen the old Dracula and Frankenstein from 1931. It's really interesting to see that Bela Lugosi really looks like the typical image of dracula we have today. But today it isn't that scary. And Klaus Kinsky is still my favorit!
But Frankenstein was really great. I really liked it.

The next movie I'll watch is the old "Phantom of the opera".

If you like 70s, 80s horror movies those from Dario Argento are between the best I have ever seen...and the soundtracks made by Goblin are for sure the scarriest ever!! My favorite movies of him are: Suspiria, Profondo Rosso, Phenomena and Tenebre...

  • I love black and white silent movies, myself.
