Wrong and right ways to practice?

I have heard about this before but only have a very vague idea of it. What are the wrong and right ways to practice? Which right ways will make my progression of learning the guitar quicker and which wrong ways will slow down the learning time?

Looking forward to hearing the tips and ideas.

Please try to bullet point them if you can

    Thanks

Well one thing is it's better to practise for, say, 15 minutes a day, rather than an hour once a week.

I think the 'wrong' ways to practice are more about developing bad habits...

  • I think a list of those bad habits would be useful :)

The most I have found so far is to know the difference between practice and playing. Also to get into the habit of puttting the thumb underneath the guitar neck.

Is anyone else going to give feed back on this?

Here is something I noticed about begginers : they tend to use only one finger (I used to do it myself). It's really a problem, and there's no way you're gonna improve your skills if you play like that.

There's a thing everyone should do : use all of your finger instead of freting every note with your index.

A simple exercise should help you training all your fingers : put your index finger on any string first fret and play the note, then middle finger second fret play the note, ring finger third fret play the note, ring finger fourth fret play the note, pinky fifth fret play the note...

Do it slowly the first times, and try to go faster and faster. All the notes you play should sound clear (no buzzing).

This exercise will become too easy for you in a short period of time if you practice it daily. You can make it harder for example by stretching you middle finger straight to the third fret instead of using it on the second.

I have heard that you must have a timetable of how you will practice.

Practicing one thing a day is better than practicing many different things each day

Planning your practicing when you are a beginner is bullsh*t, seriously. It will make you confused and discouraged (it still makes me) and I did fine just playing for fun and getting better that way. Hell, that still works fine.

So sitting around playing the same scale over and over again with a metronome might take you where you want faster than just fooling around, but guitar should be about fun and not about being able to shredz0r 20 tones per second.

So please, chill out with the "practicing". Practicing is plain boring.

i agree, ..somewhat, i guess ive done the scale thing a few times before, but i also dont plot out when i play, its just whenever i feel like it

if you start plotting out timetables of what you are gonna play and when it will quickly suck the fun out of learning

as for how long to play, i guess whatever you feel like, some days i might play 10mins others ill play for an hour, as long as you are having fun its all that matters :)

In the weeks I have been gone I have start practising with a timetable. I would recomend everyone does that ;)

  • The only "wrong" way to practice guitar is alone.

Get together with people of a similar or greater ability, and play music once a week. As your brain realises where your deficiencies lie, you can do some exercises in your spare time to improve on them. But always find the time to chill with some friends and play music.

Lacking that, there is a multitude of videos on youtube of people filming themselves play. Pick a person and play along.

    Curse you all men,
    Whose coil is strong

I'll have to disagree with that. Distractions can come easily in a group. Plus once a week is not adequate I have noticed

Im not saying that playing with a group is a bad thing but from what I have learned since I started this thread is that you have to be more devoted in spending your spare time. So playing alone can not be ruled out altogether as “wrong”.

i agree ive developed some good skills by myself but yesterday i went to my friend devins house and played guitar with him. hes amazing at it and he showed me so many new things i had no idea about at all. when i came home and tried to do all the stuff again without his helped, i realized how VERY MUCH i need to practice. and also, how much in dire need i am of a better amp. mine is what you would call... cute. i need a mean amp.
