    Doubts

Okay, a group to express Freedom. Sounds like a good idea on paper.

I don't want to pre-empt a catastrophic failure, but I have doubts as to how this group is going to work.

For one thing the description puzzled me slightly with "This group (sponsored by Philips) is all about freedom and expressing what it means."

Ok, does that mean its about freedom of expression or literally expressing freedom? I'm not entirely sure how the latter of the two would differ from the former, or if it would differ at all.

Secondly, the tagging thing. I'm familiar with the last.fm tagging system, and this idea strikes me as quite likely to go horribly wrong. Without wanting to open up a heated debate on old topics, I've noticed lots of people on the site/in the community, have argued over what should have what tag.

Surely one man's 'freedom song' is another man's 'opression song'...or something along those lines.

And finally, if you'll forgive the negativity, if we're talking about freedom of expression, won't that encourage people to go around 'bashing' people's musical tastes and so on and so forth.

Anyway, thankyou for listening. I hope this group does well, and that none of my doubts end up happening. If someone could explain a back-up plan or reason why I'm just paranoid, that would be most reassuring, thankyou.

Hmmm, the distributor search on their site says the headphones are sold at argos and woolworths. Unfortunately a search of the argos or woolworths websites disagrees.

They can get people tagging their arses off, but if nobody can buy the damn product then it's not going to do Philips much good.

I am doing my exam on freedom so yeah we got all this stuff in the melting pot at the start and I managed to link freedom to sephiroth masterchief and cheese so freedom is anyones bet. my personal opinion is that it comes with death.

  • Response to your "Doubts"

Hello, we instigated this partnership on Lastfm and therefore I am happy to answer questions.

To give you some background to the idea about the campaign, we wanted to involve Lastfm users in defining what we mean by freedom within music. In other words, What artists represent freedom to different audience, different countries, or different listening groups?

The reason for doing this is that we can eventually publish these ideas as a view on freedom within music from users of Lastfm. As has been said in some of the comments, freedom means many different things to many different people, so we are not trying to define it as such, merely trying to explore one angle of it in music.

We would love to evolve this with you all and see where it takes us. Indeed we may find that one persons freedom is another persons oppression, but we hope it will encourage healthy debate on the subject of freedom.

Ok, that sounds pretty reasonable. I think my original interpretation was a little over general then.

So the core of this operation is the tagging system? Ok, yeah, I can see how that would work. Obviously you have the same drawbacks as you would with any questionnaire (except possibly the price?). Sounds interesting, I'm sure the results will be interesting. Good luck, hope it goes well.

  • Tagging

    Hi Grant,

Yes essentially what we want is to see the albums which represent freedom or the songs, or the artists. So simply tagging them is enough and the ones with the most freedom tags will make it onto the quilt.

We are therefore hoping that the quilt keeps growing and growing through this and that the mix of music is hugely diverse.

    Thanks for your support

    Matt

At the risk of member punishment (which I am unfamiliar to at this stage in my time at Last.fm), I would just like to restate my earlier post, that I find this group very frustrating, and that I'm not alone in this view.

Sarcasm of the shoutbox aside, is there any way for my frustration over the existence of this advertising project to be addressed? Or is it unnatural on my behalf to feel like this shouldn't be taking place?

    Devin Townsend appreciator.

yes. Give in to Reagonomics now

Odd that there are no posts on here since May 2007, until Greyhawk.
Since I remember making a rather sarcastic one (for a change)
    I wonder where it/they went

I'll raise you a Ludwig von Mises and see you a Murray Rothbard.

  • I had to wikipedia Rothbard. I just love Americans who can't speak Austrian, and ignore individual psychology, but claim they are part of the Austrian School. Idiots.

    Menger was a legend, though

But I think the current state of the US stock market makes this an EXCELLENT time to relive Keynes' opinions on the inherently unstable nature of speculative capital, which Rothbard would have no doubt criticised

I counter your Murray Rothbard with Karl Polanyi. Go-Go gadget embeddedness!
