@ZombiePsyche: what you are hearing is called placebo-effect. Really, I use a decent soundsystem and am trained into hearing compression artifacts, and usually can't even hear the difference between 96kbps Vorbis and FLAC. Did you ever tried using an ABX-test to 'prove' your claims? I really am not deaf, for the record.

I did a comparison of 160 vs. 320 vs. FLAC & if you have even a decent sound system, the difference is larger than night & day. You must be deaf if you can't tell a difference between 320 vs. FLAC, let alone 160 vs. 320.

Most people won't even hear the difference between a ~160kbps MP3 / AAC and the losless file. BUT flac is great for doing backups of your CDs (Accurate Rip, CTDB) + you can transcode to any other lossy or losless format in the future without having to re-rip your collection. Who cares about space these days? 2TB drives are about 70-80 Euros.

I've yet to see someone provide a screen cap of a blind ABX test with Foobar proving that they successfully heard the difference between MP3 320kbps and FLAC without guessing. Flac is really only good for archiving purposes, complete waste of space for listening to however.

EMU 0404 -> Foobar (ASIO) -> HD 650. Not the best, but decent for starters. Thinking about buying an Audiotailor Jade headphone amp.

To convert FLAC ->mp3 use Razorlame together with a LAME mp3 encoder. I can give you further details if you need help.

FLAC + good sound card + good speakers = win. Otherwise, sometimes it's hard to feel the difference between FLAC and MP3.
