Station and artist recommendations and suggestions

I'll start this thread off with some traditional east Asian, south pacific and native American stations and artists.
I've been PM-ing back and forth with one of our new members, and was going to give her some stations and artists to listen to, but decided to post it for the whole group and open this thread where you can also list some of your favorites. All the following links are play links.
First of all, some great tag radio from the south pacific islands,
    South-Pacific-Islands
Not too many European influences here, lots of rapid drumming, not much yuke playing. Enjoy.
If you want to hear some Yuke playing in that good old Hawaiian way though, check out this artist
    Darlene Ahuna

Next my 3 favorite global tags for east Asian music,
    Asian-Classical-and-Traditional
    -
    Chinese-Traditional
    -
    Traditional-Japanese
    -
    For Andean music I like
    Los Kjarkas
    similar artists station
    Los-Kjarkas'-Similar
I'll also suggest some good artists for native American music from Mexico. Check out
For Mixtec music from the state of Oaxaca check out
    Grupo Huave Siete Mares
    -
    R. Luengas, P. Garcia, E. J. Serralde
    -
    Vicky Diaz, Silvia Martinez
    -
For Aztec and Mayan traditional sounds I highly recommend
    Xavier Quijas Yxayotl
who artfully recreates precolombian music from those cultures and others.

If you like the traditional music of India, try "Indian classical" as a tag word (sorry, don't know how to make a link for that one).

Do you know any good radios, tags or artists that play something in the vein of north-african folk? I love Anouar Brahem and some other oud-players but wikipedia isn't very useful in finding new stuff to listen to.

Antero Tienaho Listen to me. And tell me what you heard.

Hey impronen welcome to the group. Check out
    Matoub Lounès
and listen to his similar artists station, it seems to be a good one for what you want. I seem to find that artists with listeners in the hundreds will play you similar artists more in line with their own music while popular artists have similar artists that look like a general world music top 40. Have you messed with the last.fm playground yet? Take a look at this.
    http://playground.last.fm/multitag/artists/%2522north%2520africa%2522%2520folk
    Also check out artists
    Knossos
    and
    Hamza El Din
I hope others chime in with recommendations.

Hi Mirko, thanks for the suggestions, and welcome to the group! Digging your first bossa track on your page. I'll go ahead and connect you.

  • i love Latin music!
    some good artists are:
    Los Amigos Invisibles
    Ozomatli
    Locos Por Juana
i would be super happy if anyone could please recommend some Italian, German, or Russian artists.

    peace love euphony
  • * Птица Тылобурдо (I don't know Udmurtian, supposedly this title could be translated as "The Bird", streamable, full tracks).

I've just discovered those funny young girls from Udmurtia, Russian Federation. not exactly traditional, rather folk based avantgarde. indfuences could be easily tracked, still very funny. I liked their usage of empty beer bottles as a musical instrument. listen full tracks and watch a couple of their videos. hope you might like it.

    * Течёт речека (there must be a typo in the song title tag -- it should be spelt as 'Течёт речеЧка' -- 'A [small] river flows').

surely, it's almost impossible to apprehend a song as a whole piece without understanding lyrics. still you might try )) this song is from "Последняя малина", a fully streamable album title by Хвост (Alexey Khvostenko), not so well known but pretty influencing underground song-writer (bard).

    confusion will be my epitaph...
  • thank you very much yohanpalych, i especially like Течёт речека (or Течёт речеЧка), even though i do not understand it, it is still a good song. :)
i have just recently found an awesome Russian band, Gruppa.FM. (my favorite song is Имя на асфальте)

    peace love euphony

from here you can download some serbian folk songs. They are mostly old songs, from WWII or even older. And the first one ''Boze Pravde'' is our national anthem nowadays

I don't have any station suggestions, but I have come across some new to me artists that I've really enjoyed. I'll gladly share them with you all! I am recently loving the African sounds, really love Daby Toure (originally from Mauritania, now in France). Picked up his album Stereo Spirit, it is awesome, love the first track "Kebaluso". His vocals are really good. Have also found the album Tenebre ( sorry there should be some french accents over the "e"s) by artist Idy Oulo, a Cameroon born singer/guitarist. The song "Ne gros et beau" is delightful, and I just love the little play on words in the title.

I've also had opportunity to see a Mongolian band called Hanggai. If anyone is at all interested in a fusion of modern, chinese, and mongolian throat singing, then check them out. They were amazing!

Finally I would love to suggest the Northern Cree Singers. I would consider them ethnic Native American, I guess. They are a Powwow drum and vocal group. They sing in Cree with traditional drum accompaniment. Listening to them makes you want to jump up and start round dancing!

  • Bugotak's new album (2009)

    Wheels Must Roll.
Ethnic siberian music in modern hard (you know, it's hard to live there:) way.

    Bugotak - progressive Siberian folklore
  • Dark Patrick

This is our ethnic fusion project called Dark Patrick. I would appreciate it if you would have a listen and prehaps leave some feedback:)

Check out the music of Ron Perovich if you like to hear blends of India, the Middle East, Flamenco and general belly dance music. Very little synth, mostly acoustic instruments, in a wide range of styles.

    °° Cinkuši

    °° Dunja Knebl

a special type of singing "a capella" traditional in Dalmatia (group of singers is called Klapa)

°° Klapa sv.Juraj - Zaspalo je siroče very sad traditional song with a translation to understand it better >>

    ORPHAN FELL ASLEEP

    Orphan has fell asleep
    forth the foreign doors,
It is calling with its hands
    across the blue sea.

    Come, come, my father,
    dark night is coming,
    our darling mother
    is still not home.

    Last night she was taken
    by some strange people,
    they've singing her silently
    not to wake her up.

    Orphan has fell asleep
    under the lilac,
    It will be waken up
by the dawn of judgement day.

°° Klapa Sinj - Izresla ruža rumena (A red rose has grown)

    female version of "Klapa" singing:
    °° Klapa Neverin - Cetina ♥

and my gift to all of you, and the best way to represent you something already known but in a different version - "Klapa" singing I can see clearly now

    I hope you'll enjoy :)

    Tansu Tumer-Afraid of What?

Hello Dear Ethnic Music Lovers :) My solo album has just been released. It has a very different sound and different techniques than the common bass oriented albums and has lots of world music elements from Africa, Middle East, Balkans, etc... You can check the music with the video and the Last.fm links below... Thanks!
