    Favourite Discworld Book

Sorry, i know its a standard thread but no-one else seemed to have made one, so i thought i'd do it. Anyway, i'd say mine are 'Guards, Guards' and 'Going Postal'.

Difficult to choose just one. My top selection would be Thief of Time, Guards Guards, Nightwatch, Going Postal, and Thud.

"Buggrit, buggrit, millenium hand and shrimp, I tol' em..."
  • Guards Guards is a classic, but my favourites are Small Gods and Pyramids, no question.

The more recent ones (Night Watch, Going Postal, Thud) are lessening my interest in the Discworld to be honest. I haven't been as entertained or encouraged to view things in totally unexpected ways for awhile.

Yup, definately difficult to choose just one, especially with the way the cast of regular favourites is expanding...

I would have to go with Sourcery, Pyramids, The Truth and the Thief of Time just now, with Monstrous Regiment mentioned in dispatches.

By a far distance Soul Music.

  • That's interesting. What was it that you found good about Monstrous Regiment Soundhog?

I don't want that to sound mean, so I'll reword it... What in particular raises it a little above the rest for you.

Good question... It's certainly part of the dark side of the Discworld (amongst others like Night Watch and Thud) The new characters did it for me. TP usually uses Vimes and/or The Watch or the Witches when he wanders into the murkier areas of storytelling which aren't so laugh-a-minute, so it was refreshing to have some well rounded new characters to read about.
I guess it's because I enjoy it when he starts to cover new ground/direction. It's adding a little more detail to the bigger picture.

  • I can certainly appreciate that. I love seeing new ground broken on the Disc. However, I felt slightly let down by having the end revovle around getting to Vimes (because it felt like less new ground, if you see what I mean). And being trapped in a forest with a bunch of atypical versions of the people who lived in the new country also left me feeling a little like I don't really know how it all worked.

Ah well, Bring on the next one!

That's a fair point. For me it goes back to familiarity, which is a little ironic considering I like the new aspect of this one. Although the story essentially concerns new characters in a new setting, the fact that Vimes is included adds the literary equivalent of a comfort blanket, lol. OK, maybe not a good choice of words but does it makes sense? Vimes is someone you immediately identify with as he's more or less developed in front of our eyes over the years, so he helps affirm that bigger, familar Discworld picture which keeps the story grounded.

Mind you, it's got to the stage now where, as long as there's a mention of either Death, an Igor, the Clacks, Dibbler, any of the Beggars, the UU or Lancre, you know where you are so major characters can blend more rather than stand out.

I would say Thief of Time and Pyramids. And Small Gods.
My favourite characters are the witches. I didn't like Vimes and the watch a lot at first but Vimes has developed so much over the stories that he's now also one of my favourites.

    Top artists:
  • Night Watch without a doubt. It's amazing. I love Going Postal, Jingo and Guards! Guards! too.

    Coming soon:

I've heard that Wintersmith is the new Tiffany Aching book and Making Money (featuring Moist von Lipwig of Going Postal fame) is the next Discworld novel.
Plus Johnny & the Bomb is being made into a TV series, and Hogfather into a film.

    Busy guy...

I got that from the Discworld Monthly e-newsletter. January's edition (106) mentioned:

"Terry is in the final stages of finishing off Wintersmith (the third Tiffany Aching book) and has as a present to himself started writing the next Discworld novel. Previously we understood this would be a story about football called Unseen Academicals but it turns out that it is now in fact a new Moist Von Lipwig story called Making Money."

Wintersmith can be pre-ordered from Amazon according to the most recent issue...

No worries. It's a Discworld offshoot series aimed at a 'younger' audience, but only in so far that the main character is a 9 year old witch in training, Tiffany Aching. 'Younger audience' is a bit misleading as it's likely all Discworld fans read them any way as they are just as funny. He's taken some of his ensemble cast of characters and developed them a little more at the same time, like the Nac Mac Feegle ( "...crivens!") although main characters like Granny Weatherwax turn up as well.
The first book in the series is The Wee Free Men, the second being A Hat Full of Sky. Wintersmith is the third.
I guess, as with The Bromeliad and Johnny Maxwell series of (non-Discworld) books, he's just applying the 'change is as good as a rest' principle to develop some spare ideas. I've only read Only You Can Save Mankind but the idea, that the inhabitants of a computer game ask to surrender to the player rather than get zapped, made for a great story.

I've read that Wintersmith is due to be published on the 28th September.
I'm not sure about Making Money as it's still being written, although he usually manages a main series title out just before xmas so fingers X'd

The Johnny Maxwell books are all good, i read them long before i started to read Discworld books, and after comparing them you can definately see its by Pratchett (the trousers of time make a few appearances).

My favourites of the 'Grown Up' books would have to be Soul Music, Going Postal and Nightwatch.

Additionaly, the children books are just as amazing. And I can read Maurice (The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, that is) any day.

I'm happy to hear that there's a new Tiffany book coming out, it's nice to see the development of another witch other than Granny. What with Granny making the impression of being invincible nowadays, especially considering the kind of 'Deus Ex Machina' ending in Carpe Jugulum, but whenever she does show up in the Tiffany books it's nice to have that familiair touch.

As for the new Moist book that was mentioned... I can't wait! Moist was definitely interesting to read about, though I wonder how far his character can be pushed in new books. I expected him to be like Otto (the photographer from the Truth)... he'd show up in the new books, but stories wouldn't entirely be about him. Oh well, I've faith in Pterry. As long as there's plenty of Vetinari & Moist conversations in the new book, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Well, that's enough rambling for me... oh yeah, I also like music and stuff. ;)

  • My faves would have to be Soul Music and Small Gods. I first read Small Gods when I was about 15 and have only just read it again, nearing 25. I enjoyed the book a lot when I first read it but found it even better 10 years later. So much of it would have went over my head at 15, especially all of those philosophy jokes. Now that I'm older and more experienced, I can enjoy these books in a different way. Looking forward to re-reading the rest...

  • heh... My favourite books are those most recently reat. I love them all.

Just read that Terry Gilliam is making Good Omens into a film as well. Now that should be good...

Hm. Hard decision.. I think most of them were equally good.. Though I didn't like 'Moving Pictures' as much. 'Pyramides' was nice. And.. uh, I don't know the english title. The one where Death became 'Bill Door'.. =]

    That would be "Reaper Man"...
