what's your favorite disco?

  • I've really got into The Supremes (the disco years!) recently. They released some great stuff in the mid-70's which should have been massive:
    - He's My Man
    - I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking
    - Let Yourself Go
    - You're My Driving Wheel
    - High Energy

    Anyone else agree?

I'm sorry but ABBA were not disco. They are the reason why people think disco music is cheesy and crap.

Earth Wind & Fire are possibly the greatest of all time. However, Michael Jackson has some of the most catchy, inspiring disco tunes ever written. Other ace amazing disco groups are Chic, Kool & The Gang, and Rick James. Yes.

Latecomer to this thread I know, but what the heck...

Abba definitely weren't (or should I say aren't) disco. It's not just the music, but rather the image... the whole 'scene'. In the late 70s and early 80s, real disco DJ's wouldn't dare play an Abba track. It just wasn't done. Not to say their music wasn't good, it just wasn't appropriate' in that context. Trust me, I know.... I was there. Younger folks (anyone under 40) can never appreciate what 'disco' meant at the time. It was a really powerful phenomenon. Watch the movie 'Boogie Nights' for a real flavour of what I mean. Not an Abba song in sight.

Apart from the obvious artists mentioned already, my personal faves are Candi Staton and Evelyn "Champagne" King, but that's a tough call. Donna Summer has the greatest 'depth' of material... loads of great albums. Incidentally, she's still got a superb, powerful voice. She really was (and is) the queen of disco.

You are wrong. I can appreciate it well the underground disco...Donna Summer? abba? Not mah style of what good disco is. DOnna Summer made feel you and thats it in my book.

  • Anyone have good tribal disco? Anything obscure? Like Rinder&Lewis.

    Korea Now!

Contemporarily, my disco taste seems to centre on Korea!
Dig 엄정화's Friday Night (2006) and T-ARA's Roly Poly (2011).

NB: A recent all-members message suggests that this group's been hijacked, for the promotion of an external website (possibly a miscommunication). So, unless this's proved to be not the case, I'll be moving my disco love to Funk, Soul, Disco, Rare Groove and Disco! That's where the happy people go! (which'd be a disappointment, since I'm one of the 1st 50 members here) - Ian

    Janice-Marie Johnson, no question...
That lady is not only Fine to look at, but that bass is just as nice on the ears.
If she gave bass lessons, I'd be one of the first to sign up...
(private lessons would be even nicer)

Shoot, I'd even consider marriage, to get free lessons ;)
It would NOT be a big sacrifice...

  • Disco Faves

The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Earth Wind & Fire to name a few!

  • Chic, Heatwave, Donna Summer, EWF, The Jacksons, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Giorgio Moroder come most readily to mind.

  • Heavy into DJ-friendly edits right now. A few labels I'd recommend are File Under Disco, Editorial, Superbreak, and Dikso; all put out incredible contemporary re-edits of classic cuts!
