"I don't like people from X, I don't like mass immigration but I'm not racist, I have coloured friends :/"

No way idiot, you're a racist. Those people are poor because of "great nations". Suck all the wealth (diamonds, etc) of Africa for years, then say "I don't want those people in my country. They're destroying our culture :(". This is hypocrisy.

i see that here are a lot of people who just dismiss racism, which is totally cool, i think it's the reasonable thing to do. i'm strongly against it too, but i can't agree with some of your reasons. so since we can form some sort of a majority that the dude is a racist, i'm going to talk about some stuff some of you mentioned in the reasons agains racism.

first of all - it's ok to make the difference between rroma people and romanians. admitting that we belong to different cultures is not a bad thing, in fact it's a precondition to some political rights any minority might get from the majority. accepting the ethnic, cultural differences would lead to political reprezentation, which gypsies in romania dont have. i'm from romania so i kind of know all this "internal stuff" so to say. so, it's not the difference itself that is bad, but the use of it, which marx would call "ideology". why is the difference used in a wrong way is a long story that i won't be telling here, but just reflect on this: let's just say that the jews were actually doing all those things hitler accused them of. even in this case antisemitism would've been an ideology! of course not all the gypsies steal, or do wtv, but even if they were, to use that to exclude an entire culture is idelogical (racism).

acknowledging differences shouldn't work like this, but for most romanians, the differences are stated so that we can create a "pure" image of "our people", which is decaying because of the "intruders", "deviants" etc. this is not a new thing. if you check the history, europe developed a self-concious image, identity, in opposition to the constructed image of the "savage" applied to the people they colonized - uncivilized, barbarian, sub-human, etc. the claim that europeans were civilized, that there was only one way of developing for all the human beings around the world, one possible universe of meaning for the whole humanity etc, was used as a standard to dominate other cultures. the claim itself that we can understand a different culture and compare it to ours is ideological and false. we can't. all our notions, concepts and ideas of what's good or right, our meanings of the world, how the world runs, etc, etc, are social constructs developed in our OWN culture through our OWN history and therefore we can't just judge other cultures (with different notions, concepts, ideas developed thourgh their own history) using them. basically it's all in foucault, deleuze, derrida, claude levi-strauss, most of the neo-marixsts, structuralists and post-structuralists. my point was that claiming that we can understand other cultures, we considered ourselves the standard to compare them to, and therefore they were seen as primitive, inferior, sub-human, etc. - and it served as a perfect justification for slavery.

now let's just take all that and apply it in the romanian-rroma problem. romanians think they can actually understand the rroma culture. in fact we can't. EUROPE can't (as sarkozy proved perfectly with the expulsion of gypsies last year). it's impossible. they are a nomad culture, recently released from slavery, with different perspectives on the world. we just apply our own culturally-determined models of "how a civilised european should be" and what "a civilised european should do" on a different culture that works completely different. and again the result is a sub-race, sub-humans, parasites, etc, their way of life is primitive, their art is kitsch, etc. i think the way integration had been done can be better related to assimilation. and for this "integration" to work it would imply the same things i've written about above: that OUR culture is the one worth being set for a model. i have serious doubts about that. all cultures are equal, as radically different universes of meaning. we can negociate a common ground, but we can't just claim the superiority of our culture and impose it on others.
