Your experiences with racism?

ah I spotted a couple fellow aussies in this forum complaining about our country lol. ya I live in australia too... we pride on being a multicultural nation. I see lots of coloured people working happily with one another and it's great ^_^ but racism still definitely exists, perhaps just in more subtle forms. it's even reflected in some of our current laws...

thing is, people keep pulling out the "I'm not racist" excuse... and it's dumb cos it just leads to further neglect of prejudice and oppression. on a more cultural level people use humour as a boundary marker... but it still has the effect of excluding and marginalizing groups... I used to play alot of xbox live but what put me off, was how offensive and racist some of the people were. there was this whole unhealthy war thing going on between america vs. australia vs. england. a belief of superiority kinda thing... not just that but people keep throwing alot of jewish jokes around and derogatory terms, "you fucking nigger." etc. etc.

I've been called a stupid white cunt by a clearly mad black girl. She deliberately put her bag on my chair during class and went up to him accusing me of trying to steal it from her.

My brother-in-law is muslim and I really love him very much. I kind of grew up in a muslim community and all of my friends from there are great people and lately there's so much hatred going around I really get mad. Because people around me constantly say stupid things without having the slightest clue what they are talking about and in historical terms my country hasn't had such problems before.
So, when someone I don't really know starts speaking stupid things I place my serious face on and say "Did I tell you I am a muslim, too?" and watch them turn ghostly pale. I know it's wrong to lie, but... hey, I am not the one who insults other people based on what they believe in or how they look like.
