Albums to daydream to.

  • Albums to daydream to.

Do you ever put on an album expressly for the purposes of daydreaming?

Most of the time, I just zone out of the world on any random album I just happen to have on. But on some days, I want to think about nothing and everything all at the same time and usually it's soundtracked by Haralambos, ( ) or any number of other post-rock stuff. You?

Any old album you really like and know very well, so you can follow the music without really paying attention.

Lately I've been listening a lot to Hunky Dory on my mp3 player when walking around the city, which is when I do most of my daydreaming.

  • I like those albums too (for me, it would be something like Galore: The Singles 1987-1997 or Godlovesugly).. only instead of walking around, I tend to do a lot of daydreaming while driving on the freeway. Ever have that experience where you get to your destination and you can't remember the last 30 minutes of driving?

to be honest, i'm fairly sure we all daydream to different albums :) kind of the point, isn't it?

one of my favorites, though, is selected ambient works vol. II, by radiohead. particularly the second disc.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works
Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
    Slowdive - Souvlaki

  • And The Glass Handed Kites
    Relationship of Command
    Random Avenger
    and Serenada Schizophrana
are some of the albums that have gotten me daydreaming as of late.

I think that in order for an album to be a candidate for daydreaming, it has to have some melodic trend throughout that requires simultaneous left brain-right brain cognition. Left brain literality to appreciate the structure and add the context that differentiates a daydream from a "night" dream, right brain figurativeness to take care of figurative meaning and to add that abstract quality that differentiates a daydream from reality. Ambient and post rock music seem to be acclimated in these two categories by their very nature.

Any Boards of Canada, almost every soft post-rock like mum or Sigur Rós, chill like Zero 7, or lo-fi like Jose Gonzalez or Geoff Farina.

I listen mainly to black metal, doom metal and psychedelic rock. So basically I ONLY listen to albums to daydream to.

  • Lately, Brian Eno's Apollo does the trick for daydreaming.
