Which do you think is Bowie's best album?

You would think that we'll be able to find forum topics beyond the perliminary "What is your favorite Bowie X". :)

As to the question itself - it varies by mood. Right now I'm in a Lodger frame of mind. Ask me tomorrow and it could be Ziggy or Scary Monsters or StationToStation.

  • Why don't you start a more interesting topic!

My favorite is also Lodger. Mostly because it's wonderful, but also because it's rare compared to the others and I like pretending that I'm more indie than the other kids.

Scary Monsters is far and away the best Bowie album. Lodger's certainly very good, though.

I used to say that too until 1. Outside. :)

Um...ok. I said that before and after 1. Outside. There's really no comparison.

Well, I didn't mean to post that 3 times. But my point still stands! Nothing beats Scary Monsters!

Scary Monsters is in my top 3 (Station to Station being #3), so I definitely understand the sentiment. :)

Heh, Station to Station is an excellent album as well. The man has just made too much good music!

  • I dunno if it's far and away the best, but it's my fave one. It's interesting, artisticly great and yet perfectly listenable (which I can't say about "Heroes" for instance).

I'd say the first half of Heroes is perfectly listenable. Usually when the instrumentals start up my mind wanders a bit (though V-2 Schneider is wonderful).

  • A lot of the instrumentals by Bowie, I'm sorry to say, are quite uninteresting (compared to other instrumentals). But perhaps they were intentionally simple. There are a few good ones though, like V-2 Schneider, A New Career in A New Town etc.

  • Tin Machine! Just kidding. It's gotta be Low. Waaaaay ahead of it's time in it's reaction to punk. The beginning of the "Berlin Trilogy", the personnel didn't hurt either: Visconti, Eno, Iggy Pop...Scary Monsters is a close second only because it was built on a foundation of the albums made during the "Berlin Trilogy"...

  • u guys all suck.
i like the man who sold the world.
    low is good.
no1 mentioned the stardust album, thats crazy.
i dont like dimond dogs to much.

This is hard... can I rank them? Since I hear no objections, I'll rank the ones I have...

    1. Diamond Dogs (inc. rarities) I even have a keychain of the cover of this, I'm sad...
    2. The Man Who Sold the World
    3. Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust
    4. Low
    5. Hunky Dory
    6. Outside
    7. Space Oddity
    8. Station to Station
    9. Aladdian Sane
    10. Pin-Ups
    11. Scary Monsters

I love the "David Live" album too :)

  • I'm surprised to see so many Lodger and Scary Monster votes. Those are probably my favorites at this point, they're the best cross between accessible and experimental Bowie. In my opinion, Low is absurdly overrated and I run out of patience for the album after Sound and Vision.

I don't hear the punk in it or I guess the reaction thereof. It just sounds like a bunch of instrumentals for a movie (which it was originally made for). But, sound and vision is the shitzzle, natch!

  • it was what, nooooooooooooooooooooo.
that IS what it sounds like.

Top Album for 16 July 2006

Apparently everyone's favorite album this week is

    Hunky Dory

I did listen to it myself and while it's not the top, I do love it. For me though, there is such a fine line between love and love just a little bit more with most of Bowie's stuff. Looks like I didn't play it all the way through though or the charts must have overlapped the cutoff period! Been staying up tooooo late since I came back from vacation. Can't shake this dang jet lag. :)

Anyway, browsing through the charts, I see Hunky Dory tops the list more often than it doesn't so it would seem to be a favorite of most of the membership, if not the vocal ones. What do you think?
