    Critical Mass in your city/country

I live in Vilnius (capital of Lithuania), which has population of 542,782. Also there are Critical Mass rides in Kaunas (second largest city), Šiauliai and in small towns Visaginas and Palanga. Interesting that Klaipėda being third largest city has no CM rides. Maybe this year they gonna start it :) So that's about CM in my relatively small country.

In Vilnius CM goes every month even in quite cold Lithuanian winter. Number of participants vary from ~300 to ~15 (in winter). I hope this year we gonna reach 500. Here's some videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoiKhzdUEE0 (2007 July, problems with cops)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Xn-rjwRbk (2008 January)

A fellow with 'musical bicycle' is a constant participant so it makes rides more fun. I really enjoy Critical Mass rides and bicycle rides in general. It's nice to be a part of something right and meet a lot of friends there.

What about Critical Mass in your city?

In Helsinki these have been regular for the past few years, with often around 100 participants. The route is an established one and the police are there for traffic control.

  • I've been in oslo for the past 3 years but i havent heard of any Critical Mass events here. Have i just missed it? I think it'd be fun..

    Yours,

    CM in Budapest, Hungary

The first Critical Mass ride in Budapest (pop:2million) was organised on Car Free Day, September 22, 2004, though it was preceded by at least 50 similar bicycle events initiated either by organisations, groups of bicycle couriers, or other pockets of non-affiliated individuals. The September 2004 ride, however, was significant in that it combined almost every previous organiser into one mass of cycle enthusiasts and concerned citizens. That event drew a surprising 4000 participants. By Earth Day 2005, the number of Critical Mass participants reached 10,000, and doubled again for the September 2005 event, reaching 20,000. On Earth Day 2006 an international record of 32,000 participants was reached, to be topped only by next year’s similar event, with a turnout of 50,000, reaching as many 80,000 by April 2008.

Unfortunately there is no Critical Mass movement in my city (Malmö, Sweden) otherwise I would join before you could say "cykelpump". In Sweden, there are rides in Gothenburg and Stockholm, but that's a little too far away. Copenhagen, Denmark is a lot closer - does anyone know if there are rides there?

    Shine those shoes, Bill!
  • ive done the cirticl mass in san diego, california back in july about 600 riders cruising through downtown, total mayhem. was fulll of good times. i hope to do the san francisco ride soon.

Critical Mass in Copenhagen died. Nobody comes out to the rides and resurrecting the movement has shown to be damn near impossible - it's weird though, since Copenhagen has a great many bikers and some quite active subcultural biking movements.
Perhaps the situation for bikers around here isn't bad enough for them to get on the streets - as we all know the tendency is; "I don't have a problem, so fuck if everyone else has".

Not surprisingly. In terms of cycling infrastructure and the legislation you are the model for the World. We have to revolt, to improve. You do not have reason

    Critical Mass in Budapest

Like every year on the day of the Earth the cyclists of Budapest gathered to protest for more bicycle lane. It was so much fun for the more than 30 000 participants. Check it out:

    Is this movement in Mexico?

  • Why, its bad for cycling

If you are truly interested in cycle advocacy you would be better suited elsewhere than Critical Mass.
There are many bicycle advocacy organizations that do not break the law and punish everyday people trying to live their lives.
If you want to increase animosity and divisiveness between cyclists and motorists - and cyclists and pedestrians - then by all means, participate. Because that is what the net result is.

  • CM in Liège (Belgium)

    Hello !
In Liège, we are about 50 cyclists the last Friday of each month. Most of the time, we try to finish our CM in a social and/or cultural place.
