It's helpful to recognize and listen to commonly known and appreciated artists to have a reference, a baseline, a starting point for your musical exploration. On the other hand it's tricky just to follow the mainstream (not considered as pop this time) because your taste might stuck in one musical area. Try to follow two parallel exploration streams: mainstream and underground, classical and innovative and you will find it either educational and joyful.
