Pioneers of Goregrind, one of the founders of Melodic Death Metal as well as Death 'N' Roll, Carcass was formed in 1985 by William "Bill" Steer (guitar god) and Ken Owen (drums god). In 1987 the bassist Jeffrey "Jeff" Walker (bass god) joined them and they recorded a demo called "Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment". Their first album titled "Reek Of Putrefaction" (1988), considered a classic by the connoisseurs of Extreme music as well as Carcass fans, is very likely the most brutal piece of music ever recorded, enhanced by the low-end production and the album cover featuring human and animal remains, thus neatly encompassing the band's name and their lyrical thematic. The second album, titled "Symphonies Of Sickness" (1989) was a progress from their previous effort in terms of musicianship as well as production. Being more coherent and less chaotic, losing very little in terms of brutality and further elaborating the nature of their lyrics to an even more uncomprehensible myriad of medical terms. The following album, aptly titled "Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious" (1991), is truly a masterpiece. The production is exceptional as well as the level of musicianship and the lyrics are now completely undecypherable without a medical thesaurus. The atmosphere on the album is remarkable. Gloomy and disturbing, a mix of nausea and bliss covered in blood and gore. Oh yeah, and this album featured another guitarist - Michael Amott. "Heartwork" (1993) is easily the most recognisable Carcass album and, arguably, their finest hour. It is also the most radical change in production, music and lyrics. Discarding the medical dictionaries Heartwork turned to misanthropic and, sometimes, political lyrical themes. Probably the most commercial Carcass album to date. "Swansong" (1996) happened. Ironically, considering the name of the album, this was to be their final album. Hated by the die hard fans in the beginning, Swansong trod deep into the waters of commercial mainstream, adding a feel of Classic Rock mixed with Thrash Metal riffing. A truly unique effort, just like all Carcass albums. After that, a compilation of their b-sides and unreleased tracks titled "Wake Up And Smell The...Carcass" (1996) was released, capturing the sound of their whole career.
