    Perfect Can cover vocalist

Who do you think would do the best job of covering a Suzuki or Mooney tune?

I'd love to hear Tom Waits or Tricky tackle a Mooney, something like 'Butterfly' for Tricky and 'Mary, Mary So Contrary' for Waits.

Damo would be a bit harder... Any ideas?

I don't about "perfect" Can cover vocalists, but I think it'd be interesting to hear the Mars Volta cover Can, and maybe even (I'm hoping not too many people are gonna cringe at this) Modest Mouse - and I make this recommendation in reference to their old sound (a la Lonesome Crowded West)...

    I'd prefer Robert Wyatt.

    Jean-Herve Peron, with Faust
    Eno
    Robert Wyatt

Mike Patton would probably be able to do a decent cover. An Animal Collective or Sonic youth cover would be interesting.

I'm afraid he won't perform ever again, but Don van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) would be very nice as well. :-) David Thomas (Pere Ubu) would do too.

Funny you say that, Omar is playing a show with Damo and Charles Hayward tonight in England. That would be cool to see.

Honestly, I think anyone is capable of doing a Can cover and making something interesting out of it (imagine David Byrne). I think it would be kind of fun to see a rapper do something with Can. Isn't there a Missy Elliot mash-up or something with Vitman C on it? Not my first choice but I think it's a good idea.

Thus, the best Can 'fill-in' vocalist would be:

    William Shatner.

    lots of ideas

reportedly, John Lydon wanted to join Can after the Sex Pistols broke up. I can hear the interest on 'Second Edition' although much less groovy than Can.

As far as a Damo standin, I would nominate Gibby Haynes, although Bjork sounds pretty interesting too.

    If you...

... think you know who would make a good Can-cover, why have you not mentioned Erlend Øye?! He's into that stuff.

I think that Robert Wyatt's voice would sound great for most songs by either Mooney or Suzuki, especially since he does nonsensical lyrics and singing quite well.

I thought Jim Reid did a fine good job with the Jesus And Mary Chain cover of 'Mushroom'. Personally, I would love to hear Radiohead doing 'Bel Air'.
