Hard Rock or Heavy Metal?

  • Hard Rock or Heavy Metal?

So...is Sabbath a Hard Rock band or a Heavy Metal Band? For me the answer is quiet simple: Hard Rock.
Ok... Iommy sometimes plays a down-tuned guitar, which speaks for heavy metal, but I think it's riffy hard rock. Especially in the first album you can hear the blues influences to Sabbath! And that speaks for hard rock.
    What do you think?

I consider them heavy metal, personally. I think the guitar sound Iommi could pull off was more recognized in heavy metal over hard rock. When I think hard rock, I think Deep Purple or AC/DC. Black Sabbath is a bit heavier than them in my opinion.

Still, a great question; took some thought to answer.

If you think that BS is Hard Rock than you do not know what Black Sabbath is, nor do you know what Metal is. Black Sabbath are the first Heavy Metal band. No questions asked. Of course the definition of Metal has changed over the years, but Black Sabbath's metalness is timeless and unlike other "metal" bands of the 70s, that were deemed as such by ignorant media folk due to the "down tuned" guitar sound, BS were and are still Metal by even today's definition.

Go listen to Tyr, Mob Rules, Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules. Definitive Power Metal music of the 80s, obviously Power Metal only of the mid 80s, hence it's heavy metal (a sub-genre of Metal) by definition, I'm not talking about Hammerfall Power Metal here, more in line with Angel Witch Power Metal, which by today's definition wouldn't be Power Metal.

  • Technically, the first band that was described as heavy metal was Steppenwolf in 1968 when their hit Born To Be Wild came out. If Steppenwolf was heavy metal, then I would describe Black Sabbath has heavier metal. haha, I jest. Read up on the history.

Wikipedia cannot be trusted when discussing and documenting issues such as Heavy Metal because the media, or the populus in general, cannot be asked to distinguish between genres of music, especially when it comes to Metal.

  • If the populous in general cannot be asked to distinguish between genres of music, then who can? It would be rather arrogant to say that only a select few are "leet" enough to judge such things.

Not a select few, but at least the Metal crowd who know the intrinsic nature of Metal. The self-proclaimed rock historians and pseudo-intellectual rock music experts of wikipedia and the rock and roll hall of fame know nothing of what Metal is really about and how to classify it. That is what I meant.

  • Iommi claims he never considered them a metal band. Then again, when you practically invent something, the terminology comes along later.

They play enough bluesy stuff on the early albums to be a hard rock band, but their overall sound was too inspirational to metal for them to TRULY be considered hard rock. A metal band can write hard rock songs, and vice versa.

Really, the questions should be what genre of metal Sabbath truly is! So inspirational for Doom and Sludge, but the Tony Martin era has a very power metal feel to it. Despite the fact that so many say "Sabbath is a grea metal band," they're really tough to classify. Doesn't matter, though, because it's all fucking killer stuff.

Heavy Metal for sure, though I generally tag them Classic Metal - a combination of Classic Rock and Heavy Metal, I suppose.

  • neither..nor

I guess this is one of the most difficult questions in the world. To me, sabbath is an absolute hard rock band, but they were also the first band who started to use dark sounding riffs combined with dark/ evil lyrics. So to me, they were also the "founders" of metal.

  • To me they are simply a kick ass rock band. The great thing about Sabbath is the fact that they werent conscious they were defining a new genre, they were just doing their thing.

I consider Sabbath to be Heavy Rock because they have heavier songs like Black Sabbath but they also have softer songs like Hard Road.

I think that the early sabs definitely are:

    post-blues / proto-stoner / proto-doom / proto-heavy metaly / hard rock band !!!

    Martin era definitely is:

(pop) power/doom metal (they're too slow to be power metal and some osngs definitely are doomiest they've ever written - Virtual Death or Eternal Idol to name some ...

and this era is great also !

For me, definitely a heavy metal band. I don't really care for technical explanations, some songs are bluesy, some are classical rock, other have more metal in themselves than whole discographies by other bands have... What counts in my opinions is the general atmosphere they create when listened to. And with no doubt it's heavy metal if you ask me :]

In my opinion it depends what album (song) you mean. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is heavy metal album at all, istn it? But as songs as "iron man", "paranoid", "war pigs" have hard rock (even rock-and-roll :|) sound. I love black sabbath with they heavy metal sound, but they are gods at all! :D

  • black sabbath created metal, but also had a couplwe og hard rock/blues songs(the wizard, warning), a bit of jazz(rat salad) psychedelic rock(planet caravan) i think mainly metal but other genres are in there songs too
