    gimme

hey guys. i seriously need to get some quality black metal into my ears. can someone with more than 3 years of black metal listening experience recommend some bands. i've only come across children of bodom. thanx

  • Children of Bodom are not Black Metal. If that's the sound oyu are looking for, you are going to be disappointed.

To start Black Metal, I would suggest:
    1) Satyricon - Now Diabolical: this is a very "gentle" album, criticised by many for being too "rock", but it is a great introduction to Black Metal and is Satyricon's most accessible work. Their album Nemesis Divina is arguably the best, but takes some getting used to.
    2) Mayhem - De Misteriis Dom Sathanas: I always mess up the spelling, but this is the best Black Metal album ever. Nothing rivals this. The guitar player in this band defined what Black Metal is and basically started the movement. This is his magnum opus, recorded shortly before his death.
    3) Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse: these guys pretty much invented the "symphonic" side of Black Metal, using keyboards and classical arrangements to create a very chaotic sound. Very, very different to the two albums above in style, but unquestionably Black Metal.
    4) Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger: this is as raw and as lo-fi as Black Metal gets. There is no production value, no clean sound anywhere, just buzzsaw riffs and brutality.
    5) Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice: these guys are the best thing in modern Black Metal. This is the first in an amazing trilogy of complex conceptual albums. Lots of outside influences, choral music, clean guitars and gregorian chants.

Try those to begin with. They are the most popular choices. There are plenty of better, more obscure bands with a lot more street cred, but these five will give you an overview of the different styles. Then you can get into the slightly less accesible but equally incredible bands like Immortal, Gorgoroth, Thorns, Bathory, Abigor and the unrivalled Burzum.

    Curse you all men,
    Whose coil is strong

I used to just think CoB was melodic black metal with a heavy power metal influence, but it seems between their official site, wikipedia, and here at last.fm people label them all over the place. anyway it matters not, cheers for the recommendations.

  • It's weird how people categorise bands - to me CoB sound like a power metal band with some death metal elements (up until ...Deathroll) and thrash metal elements after that.

soilmate666: going form the top of my head, this should prolly be a good start:

    1)Windir - Arntor
    2) Mortuary Drape - Into The Drape
    3) Janvs - Fvlgvres
    4) Nefandus - The Nightwinds Carried Our Names
    5) Children of Maani - The Veil of Osiris
    6) Nazgûl - De Expugnatione Elfmuth
    7) Countess - Heilig Vuur
    8) Adhur/Aiumeen Basoa/Ilbeltz -Triarchy of Vasconia (Split)
    9) Urfaust - Der freiwillige Bettler

  • Darkspace has a female vocalist and bassist; they create incredible ambient black metal.
