Watain got a grammy, but this doesn't make them commersial, just a damn good band. Their last album is really good. Dimmu Borgir and CoF got some really serious sucess in the US, they can probably be considered commersial... But I don't care, this isn't important to me. If I like a band I listen to it regardless of the fact how many fans it has. I like both Dimmu Borgir (i don't like their last album tho) and Khors...

Being commercial is all relative really. Compared to top 40 chart music no black metal is commercial, but if you compare Dimmu Borgir, for example, with some underground BM band then obviously Dimmu look commercial.

Commercial is an exaggeration when it comes to Black Metal. The most obvious choices would be Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir of course.

I think commercial means earning money with your music. Most of bm bands do not really earn it. lots of bands that sell records actually spend more on production.
Bands that give concerts for money - yes, it sounds more like commercial. You need to be Varg to be able to earn only selling records, i think concerts really bring more money.
and there is also a difference between 'earn your living' and 'earn good money', and i'd call only the second type of groups commercial. They can be easily distinguished from others by their pictures on last fm. they have lots of photos and most of them are professional and photoshopped. I'd say that not only cof and db are commercial. the other ones that i remember now are satyricon, shining, dark funeral. there are lots of commercial bands, of course, and although they don't let you earn as much money as pop music, still i think the sums they bring are quite large.
