from the oxford english dictionary - classical music - serious or conventional music following long-established principles rather than a folk, jazz por popular tradition; classic - judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind; so - whether the phrase was really coined by great Nina Simone or not i still think that precision in using the language might only help so Black Classic Music seems to be the only not misleading and clear message; all the best 2 u all :)))

hello; i admire the lot here, i even listen to some ;) and at the same time i still think that the music here is classic, whereas classical are bach or stockhausen or xenakis or reich, for instance - in other words you are listening to a more or less ambitious ENTERTAINMENT (leaving aside jazz giants like davis or lester bowie here) stuff which i think is all about feeling nice, having fun and forgetting while classical music has always been part of ART, which is all about tearing apart, passion and learning; all the best and take care :)))

@gawt I am by no means saying you should look at someone and see them for the color of their skin. I do think it's okay to celebrate that skin tone the very same way someone would celebrate their Irish or German ancestry. I'm open to the discussion of it and like I said before, this is entirely a positive group. @iboughtanewbike Sly & the Family Stone or Parliament were once connected, not sure how they dropped off.

What is it to ignore? Blacks and whites are raised differently, mainly by the society, our community. If you search for difference you will find differences. No matter what, it's inevitable. The point is, that the same goes for people of the same race, if divided, there will be differences. Though they probably won't be in the same scale, mainly because how minorities are viewed at, pictured in media etc, it's just the butterfly effect. Wouldn't it be better if person 1 saw person 2 as person 2, instead of black person 2? Of course, there's always going to be racists and such, ignorance is a part of man kind, love can always be fought by hate, hate can be fought by love and so on. But by making people the same person but a different individual, I think it could delete some of the "regular racists". The ones that you meet daily. Miracles wouldn't appear on the first day, it's a long process since we're already fed up with the bullshit.

In my mind, their isn't enough open discussion on race relations, whether it be on a musical or purely social level. It's sort of a silly neo-liberal idea to avoid discussion of race. Wouldn't ignoring it be more painful and further our already deep mentality of segregation? Nothing wrong with taking a moment out of the day to appreciate the beauty of a culture (music being one aspect) or even a skin tone.

@Jaquandrius, How should I rather address you? I'm addressing the people of this group, not a race whatsoever. I am myself of both black and white descent. @mathewjordan I understand the cause, but not the effect. I just don't get it. I think it might create a bigger gap between races when it's socially accepted to point out differences and such. Like black is something far distant to be. I don't know if theres any subject called "black history" (I've seen this in a movie, yes, lol), if there is, for an example, wouldn't it be better if that was packed into regular history? Since it's still history.

Well gawt, this group isnt about a specific genre. Many people are confused when they come here and just expect it to be a tribute to the Jazz and early Soul greats, when in fact this group bridges all genres, genders and continents. Also, genre is exactly why Nina Simone created the term Black Classical Music, so that she could control how she and her music were classified. Nonetheless, welcome.
