Biggest idol amongst bassists?

  • Biggest idol amongst bassists?

My biggest idol has to be Jason Newsted..
Great bassplayer. It's sad he didn't get to do all of his stuff back in the days when he played with Metallica. Great solos. ^^

John deacon is a great bassist. his personality was eclipsed by theose of the rest of Queen but his basslines stand out as AMAZING. great musician and hugely underrated.

  • Well, this is tough...I really like what Stefan Lessard does for the Dave Matthews Band...he is very solid and does a great job of holding all the other band members together, but he is never boring. Also, he is awesome to watch live, always on point and a very good improvisor (not to mention that he was a prodigy and started playing on an upright when he was barely a teenager). Out of any bassist, I try to take the most from his style of play. Jaco Pastorius, of course, influences me quite alot. And I like Vic Wooten, although he definitely goes overboard with the slapping sometimes.

And I forget, sometimes, to remember.

    Weak

At least people have mentioned Jaco, nobody has mentioned Mike Gordon, if he gets an endorsement from Leo Kottke he is ok by me. The Ox hasn't been mentioned, Bootsy isn't up here, Michael Henderson isn't up here. No Les Claypool? Geddy Lee but no Sting?

  • Cliff Burton (Metallica)
    David Ellefson (Megadeth)
    Duff Mackagan (GnR/Velvet Revolver)
    Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave)

    To a lesser extent:
    John Deacon (Queen)
Jason Newstead (Metallica and various other bands)
    Chris Wolstenholme (Muse)
    Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy)
    Tom Arya (Slayer)

  • Jaco of cource, no question about it :)

John Deacon, Flea and Sting have been my biggest idols for a long time, especially when I was younger and listened to them more often. Haven't listened to Sting for a while but the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Queen are still high on my playlist.

In more recent years, I've gained a great deal of respect for:
    -Tim Commerford (RatM/Audioslave)
-Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters, especially on the album "there is nothing left to lose" and to a lesser extent "the colour and the shape")
-Mike Dirnt (Green Day, I started out playing simple punk stuff on bass and he's been a huge influence on my style. I especially like "When I come around")

Also, I saw Mark King live once. He's pretty amazing on bass, but it's not my favorite music. The same goes for a lot of other amazing bassplayers out there. I've heard they're incredible and I've been meaning to check them out but I can't find the time, inbetween listening to my own music.

Lastly, why hasn't anyone mentioned Paul McCartney yet? Since I've started delving into Beatles songs I've gained great respect for the man.

I can't beleive so many people put Jason Newstead on here. He's not even close, he's not even the best metal bassist. Mind you, that same band didn't hire Les Claypool because he was "too good" (read as: he upstaged Kirk Hammett) -- even Metallica knows Newstead is average, you should too.

Cliff Burton is spinning in his grave at this thread, and rightly so.

shit you bet i have... goddam wut a tapping god!

anyways, it's definately a fact that Jaco Pastorius is the most influencial bass player of all time (all though there are many close contenders such as James Jamerson, known for simple but memorable basslines, Larry Graham who invented slap technique and John Entwistle who was possibly the first to play bass like lead guitar)

My biggest influence probably started out as Les Claypool who made me wanna pick up the bass. Until I heard Primus, I had just never heard bass playing like that.

Nowadays my biggest bass influences go to (in no particular order, with some of their best performances listed):

    Les Claypool of Primus
Songs: Tommy the Cat, DMV, Jerry Was A Racecar Driver
Albums: Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Frizzle Fry, Pork Soda

    Geddy Lee of Rush
Songs: YYZ, Tom Sawyer, Freewill, La Villa Strangiato
Albums: Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, and any of the early stuff

Jaco Pastorius of Weather Report and solo
Songs: Donna Lee, Teen Town, Come On Come Over
    Albums: Jaco Pastorius

    Victor Wooten
Songs: Classical Thump, Me & My Bass Guitar and pretty much everything else
    Albums: A Show of Hands

    Chris Squire of Yes
Songs: Heart of the Sunrise, Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, Yours Is No Disgrace, Close to the edge
Albums: Close To the Edge, Fragile, The Yes Album

    Steve Harris of Iron Maiden
Songs: Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Powerslave, Number of the Beast
Albums: Any of the 80s stuff is great

Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers
Songs: Coffee Shop, Aeroplane, Higher Ground, Around the World
Albums: Blood Sugar Sex Magick and the early albums show the bass playing much better

    Billy Sheehan
Songs and Albums: check out some stuff he did with Mr. Big and Niacin

    John Entwistle of The Who
Songs: My Generation, Won't GET Fooled Again, Boris the SPider
    Albums: Who's Next, Quadrophenia

    Jack Bruce of Cream
Songs: Crossroads, White Room, Sunshine of Your Love, Badge
Albums: I suggest a compilation such as Very Best of Cream

    Tony Levin
just look up one of many of his projects

    Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath
    Songs: N.I.B, War Pigs
    Albums: Paranoid, Black Sabbath

Greg Lake of Emerson Lake & Palmer
    Songs: Karn Evil 9, Trilogy
Albums: Brain Salad Surgey, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Tarkus

    Stuart Hamm
Look for solo stuff such as Kings of Sleep album

    John Myung of Dream Theater
Songs: Metropolis Pt. 1, Dance of Eternity, The Ytse Jam, Erotomania
Albums: Scenes from a Memory, Images & Words, Awake

    and many many others!

I suggest anyone who hasn't heard these bass players check out the songs and albums I listed. They are highly recommended if you're learning how the play bass.

Who can forget Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave's Tim Commerford? The man can certainly hold it down, with careful selection of effects so as not to overuse them. His fusion of hip hop style into rock (in the case of Rage, at any rate) worked seamlessly.

P-Funk's Bootsy Collins cannot be overlooked, either. While some may find his flashy, goofy appearance obnoxious (I personally love it), it is undeniable that he can groove like no other.

Those two are probably my greatest influences, along with Flea (as with most).

I, personally, don't like him that much.. Especially not his solos. Well, he's very skilled and got some cool things up his sleeves, but there is no feeling.. Just a bunch of scales. xD Matter of taste I guess.. :)

Melissa Auf Der Maur, I'm so truly fascinated of this woman. Incredible record, psycedelic heavy-rock rocks XD And the other work is also brilliant, I love her cover of Black Sabbath with Hand of Doom, altough she has the lead vocal and aren't playing our beloved instrument.

    Not really you know.
