    Beta testing of 1.3.2 (Vista UAC fixed) [Now with add Mac]

    A new bugfix release of the Last.fm software is out. Changes for 1.3.2 are:

    * App no longer requires administrator rights on Vista, only installation tasks will prompt for elevation
    * Better crash reporting system
    * Add to Playlist button added to toolbar
    * Manual bootstraps added
    * Record label link clickable
    * Now playing request delayed to prevent repeated skipping from sending Now Playing submissions

    We're particularly interested in all Vista users trying it out and reporting your findings. You should now never be bothered by that UAC dialog except when installing the app or its plugins.

    All the player plugins for Windows also had to be rebuilt so you'll be offered to update all of those once you've installed this beta build. It'd be nice if you could install and try scrobbling with the different players we support.

    Get the builds here:
    http://cdn.last.fm/client/Win/Last.fm-1.3.2.9.exe
    http://cdn.last.fm/client/Mac/Last.fm-1.3.2.9.dmg
    http://cdn.last.fm/client/Linux/lastfm_1.3.2.9_i386.deb
    http://cdn.last.fm/client/src/last.fm-1.3.2.9.src.tar.bz2

    Please note that for the Mac version, you will need to delete the old version before installing this new DMG.

    Thanks!

    Just tried downloading it and was getting a very slow download rate (700 bytes/sec on a 2MB cable broadband!) Will try again in about an hour :-)

    Must have been an internet glitch of some sort :-|

    [Edit]

    Now downloaded successfully :-) I'll give it some good online testing now, both the radio and the WMP10 scrobbling, though I currently still use XP (I'm waiting until next year before I install MS Vista, e.g. when M$ brings out SP1)

    The add-to-playlist button sounds interesting ;-)

  • So far its worked like a charm on Vista for me (I'm running 32-bit Vista Ultimate). Installation ran in an elevated mode and the UAC was triggered for each plugin installation (I installed iTunes, WMP, foobar2000, and Winamp plugins). Last.fm doesn't need to run elevated and tracks seem to scrobble fine from each media player I have installed. So far it seems everything is going to plan.

  • Thanks, the old client's UAC need was starting to get irritating. Works perfectly, but as above I'd say my only gripe is that each plug-in needs separate elevation.

  • Yeah, the Vista UAC elevations were a pain so glad you guys fixed that. I noticed that the mouse-over status bar url for the new record label link is missing. :p

    I'd say my only gripe is that each plug-in needs separate elevation --- didn't happen when I was installing it. May be because I am a Standard User and I was asked to run the setup as Administrator. I guess it is different when you are an administrator already and asked for elevation prompt.

    Thanks for the feedback. Yep, the plugin installers will need separate elevation as they are launched from the client itself, which runs non-elevated. A slight pain, but on the other hand you only need to do this once, so we think it's bearable.

    OK guys, guess we gotta test a clean installation of Last.fm beta!

    From a friend:

    "the installer asked that it needs to rename a folder program to program1"

    "most new guys do not intall the beta directly n people ususally upgrade n things r fine thn"

    A clean install should work just as well. I've never seen the error you're mentioning. Installer asking to rename a folder??

    No problem so far. I updated the existing client (1.3.0.62 IIRC), running on Vista Ultimate x86 with UAC enabled. No more annoying request when starting the client.

    Wow, I just installed it on my Vista with UAC disabled, and after starting it, I immediately got a popup that it had detected 88 new tracks played on my iPod (ranging from 15 till 19 of August)... It has been the first iPod scrobble dialog since a long time... So I hope it will detect it correctly again, I'll run some tests in a while, but I am hopeful again ;)

    He is using Windows Vista. I am sure you tested it in Vista too. It's weird I know sharevari.

    Just letting you know I tested the version clean installed in Windows XP today and had no problems either.

    aeiouna, right click on the app and check its properties that it hasn't got "Run as Administrator" checked.

    The iTunes plugin "itw_scrobbler.dll" (v2.0.13.0) was installed to c:\program\. Now Vista recommends to rename that folder to c:\program1\ at every start-up. :-/

    thoemmi, can you send me your log file? You can bring it up by pressing Shift-Alt-L. Then copy that into an email to erik (at) last.fm please. Many thanks!

    I don't like the fact that LastFMHelper.exe now automatically starts every time with the client. I understand that this might bring some reliability to iPod submitting, in case people have disabled Helper to start with Windows thinking it might be some bad purple monster. Of course I can just delete the whole exe, I'm just wondering why there still is not an option to choose whether or not to install it altogether.

    When I had updated the player (from 1.3.2.4 to 1.3.2.5) I started listening to some radio and then I got the announcement that there was an error. I had skipped two songs and listening to the third when that window appeared. Music kept playing, progress bar got stuck and the song didn't get scrobbled.

    Some weirdness from the container.log
    "070822 17:12:11" - "1972" - Request::onSuccessPrivate ( 157 ) - L4
    "TrackMetaData" request succeeded

    070822 17:12:11 - 000007B4 - loggingMsgHandler(51) - L2
    Qt has caught an exception thrown from an event handler. Throwing
    exceptions from an event handler is not supported in Qt. You must
    reimplement QApplication::notify() and catch all exceptions there.

    It doesn't... now.

    Will I have to restart my computer to see if that fixed it? (Right now it'll still prompt UAC)

    Wow... it didn't take that long to reproduce the error. I am glad it can now be looked into. Was this with version 1.3.2.4 or 1.3.2.5?

  • Nothing but crashing here :-(

    Tried both 1.3.2.4 and 1.3.2.5 and both just crash when the helper launches.

    Vista 32bit Buisness. (latest hotfixes, including Vista performance and reliability packs).

    My other Vista install seems happier thou.

    markgillespie, does this still happen if you completely uninstall the client, and then reinstall from scratch?

    Days of work we don't have time for I'm afraid. Fortunately, for now, the people who don't want the helper running usually know how to disable it. Eventually this will be an option. I don't like it either if that makes any difference, but it's basically unavoidable unless we get some amazing inspiration on how else to scrobble from ipods, or Apple makes iTunes open in some way.

    Had the same problem. The trick is to click on the 'Check settings for all users' button and uncheck it there too.

    Working very nice with UAC! Thank you for the quick resolution of the problem!

  • re: crashing problem.

    After a rebooot, everything seemed happy again.

    Just downloafing 1.3.2.7, will post if that that one does the same.
