Christmas and atheism.

  • I celebrate Christmas, but only because it's family tradition. Actually...

I thought about this a lot the last years and if something would make an impact, it would be people refusing to celebrate Christmas and (especially) refusing to indulge in the Consumerist "aspect" (it bascially is what Christmas these days is about).

One of my flatmates who is very opposed to Christianity and the Catholic Church in particular and who calls herself an atheist (and her family) said that they celebrate Christmas. But wait... she also said that they sing Christmas Carols together and that her grandfather reads the Christmas story.

I mean... I don't say that's a bad thing, but it just seemed really odd to me.

But generally... I think we should get rid of Christmas. As nice as it seems... It's just so deeply embedded in Capitalism (just think about Coca Cola's Santa... it's not a coincidence that a US company shaped the modern image of Santa Claus).

Easter in comparison is a better holiday because it is not as much about presents. Presents are a nice gesture, but this whole overload of objects and things, gadgets, etc just really bothers me.

I dreaded sunny days so I'll meet you at the cemetery gates...

I've been standing by the nile when I saw the lady smile.
  • I celebrate both Christmas and Easter and I don't see any problem with it.

For me, it's easy to enjoy the material spirit (food, gifts) of this holiday season without buying into the religious hype.

Do you celebrate Christmas? Do you feel that there is a contradiction between calling yourself an atheist and celebrating Christmas?
Atheism is hardly a form of organised belief, or any belief for that matter. Atheism is, by definition, the lack of any belief and the corresponding value system. We're entitled to cherrypick the positive aspects of religious holidays and enjoy a secular christmas if we want. I don't see why an atheist should abstain from celebrating largely secular holidays.
