Anekdoten was formed in 1991 by Anna Sofi Dahlberg, Nicklas Berg (now Barker), Peter Nordins and Jan Erik Liljeström and the band line up has remained intact since the beginning. Anekdoten has released 4 studio albums on their own Virta-label and 3 live albums in Japan. Sales of the albums have exceeded 60 000 copies.

Their debut album "Vemod" was released in 1993. It garnered exceedingly positive reviews and invitations to perform live in different parts of the world. Their reputation as a great live act was established after their performance at Progfest '94 in Los Angeles, which at the time was the world's most important festival for new progressive rock.

The follow up "Nucleus", released in 1995, was an uncompromized, grungy and distorted affair. It proved to be too heavy for the more conservative wing of the progrock community, yet others found "Nucleus" to be a leap forward for the band. Although somewhat controversial, "Nucleus" confirmed the band as one of the premier contemporary progressive acts and is considered a cult album among many of the fans.

In 1998 Nicklas and Peter teamed up with Stefan Dimle and Reine Fiske from another of Sweden's acclaimed progressive bands at the time - Landberk - to record an album under the moniker Morte Macabre. The album "Symphonic Holocaust" mainly consisted of soundtrack themes from 1970's era horror movies. Stefan is nowadays playing with Paatos and Reine is one of the two founding members of the acclaimed underground sensation Dungen.

Anekdoten’s third studio album "From Within" was released in 1999. On “From Within” Anekdoten moved slightly away from the 70's influenced progressive rock of its predecessors and towards a more contemporary sound.

Their fourth studio album "Gravity" was released in 2003. After the release they made three tours in Europe (covering Germany, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Italy), their first performance in Mexico and two tours in Norway.

In February 2004 Anekdoten re-released Nucleus in a remastered version. A bonus track was included and the booklet was revised and enhanced.

Anekdoten is a renowned live act in progressive circles. Apart from touring in Europe several times they have played in the USA three times - including appearances at the prestiguous Progfest and NEARfest festivals and a gig at the Knitting Factory, New York. They have also performed in Canada, Argentina, Brazil and Japan.

The Japanese Arcángelo label have released 3 live albums by Anekdoten. The first is a 4 track mini-CD called "Live EP", which was recorded in their previous hometown Borlänge, and released in 1997. The second is the 2-CD "Official Bootleg, Live In Japan", recorded at Anekdoten’s first shows in Tokyo and released in 1998. The latest Anekdoten-release is called “Waking The Dead, Live In Japan 2005”. It is a CD/2-LP stuffed with material from their two shows in Tokyo in February 2005. The album was released on CD in September and on 2-LP by the band in December 2005.

In between gigs Anekdoten are now working on material for their 5th studio album.
