Also, HotU has a LOT of free games that are abandonware or freeware. Mind, some of them aren't free, but most are. I have found some pretty excellent games there...

    Thanks for the link. :D

I've just discovered FreeSpace 2 and it's awesome! Looks pretty good by today's standards if you install all of the enhancements that people have put together since the source code was released.

Tremulous. Very unique FPS - one team plays the fairly standard humans, the other the aliens, which start off as ridiculously fast, small creatures and can evolve and stuff. It's very interesting for a freeware game, at least.

Great thread idea, by the way.

Awesome, thanks for the link. BTW, this game is open source not freeware. ;)

Also I suppose I should start on distinguishing which games work on which platforms because I know that some people do like to use macs. :)

Maybe if it was layed out like
    "...
    X Game (OS)
    Description
    ..."

    I'll think about it.

I found a thread elsewhere with tons of freeware games, my favourites being Every Extend and Cave Story:

  • Cool, cheers, I wouldn't normally just steal from another thread, but some of these are real gems that I've either forgotten or didn't realise where free.. :) Like N, which I've had on my memory stick for ages.

I'll take my time on adding the good'uns in that thread, seeing as there are so many of them (and I don't want to be lazy and just copy & past).

I hope this hasn't been posted earlier in the thread:

I just found this game but I haven't tried it: Last Chaos. It's completely free to download and play and looks like it might be interesting.

  • Dungeon Runners

Not much longevity to it, but it's fun for awhile. Send me a message if you'd like an invite.

Hmmm looks pretty scrummy.. but I dunno, subscription-based games (as in pay to get ‘extra stuff’) are hard to classify as free.

My girlfriend really likes it, I played it a bit over j-term and it was a lot of the grind. Evidently more quests are being added all the time to make up for it though.

  • Japanese SHMUP's

The guys at ABA are probably the most creative people in the Shoot'em UP scene, and are getting quite some attention. My favorites are rRootage, Torus Trooper, Parsec and A7Xpg. Noiz2 is great, too. These are conceptual SHMUPs, with rRootage, for example, consisting of only boss battles, or Torus Trooper of run against the clock rotating maps...
Tumiki fighters, as a matter of fact, is going to be released for the Wii. There is an entry at GameTrailers.

Other great SHMUPs are Embodiment of Scarlet Evil and Perfect Cherry Blossom. There are free versions of each, with only some game modes closed. These games are pure Romance and Beauty, just like Beautiful Katamari.

P.S.: Someone mentioned Every Extend, which would be wonderful had I not been unable to kill the first boss. How do you do it? I play it in the DS port.

  • ABA are great, I couldn't decide how to add it as it is more of a collection of 'abstract' games.

Anyway, I'm in the process of adding more Xfire supported games.. with the exception of a couple (Albatross18 ?).

I'm also having second thoughts about these 'Free2Play' games (e.g. Soldat & War Rock) - the basics of the game are free but there is also (always) a 'Premium Access' version of the game that you need to pay for. This, for me, turns the game into more of a demo, which is why I'm gonna either ditch them or gray them out. :(

I think greying them out is a good idea. I like Dungeon Runners but when my first premium item dropped, I was both excited and disappointed. I don't really need another P2P subscription (even if it is pretty cheap) but I wanted to be able to use the new item. :/

  • Are my eyes lying?

Believe it or not, Ground Control is listed as a free game through FilePlanet's Direct2Drive system. I am downloading it right now -the Spanish dubbing was really bad- and I am no subscriber and haven't installed any strange software -FilePlanet's downloading plug-in is not required, in case it asks for permission to install-.

Dark Conspiracy, the sequel, is not downloadable, which is quite sad, since it was a good addition to the game.

Blimey, that is even better than when I found out GTA2 was free! I suppose it was made free to promote the sequel.

Even better, if you check out the fileplanet site, they've uploaded some MP3s from the game.

    Cheers.

I play runescape...used to be addicted a while back but I've limited my play recently. Since I pay for the members version I guess I can't really say its free lol. But umm yeah, the game doesn't take a lot of skill, its mainly point and click and wait, but its strangely addicting. If anyones interested in my char, my screenname on there is the same on here, type it in highscores if you wanna kno ;)

it'll leave you physically, mentally, and emotionally scared.
  • Rorschach! It's an amazing little adventure game with an innovative conversation system. Also adorable, because it's hand-drawn.

  • See my sig for proper free games, it doesn't cost a penny only your time to fill out a few surveys then you can custom order whatever item you like. Im awaiting a wii points card so I can download some retro classics!

  • 3D Startstrike

in 1984, Realtime Games Software released 3D Starstrike on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. It was the closest thing to the Star Wars arcade machine for a home computer at that time and I loved it! You can read more about this game here.

Now somebody has remade the 3D Starstrike for PC and is offering it for free!!

    I love it!

    Get it here

BTW is anyone else getting sick of all the spammy links to these referral sites that offer "free games" or "free Wii points" etc?
Every forum I visit seems to be inundated with them! Grrrr!

  • Thanks for the link, Ex! Brings back strong memories of the first 2 games in the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series (which isn't all that surprising really)!

Speaking of classic remakes of games and stuff, check out/subscribe to retroremakes blog lots of links to free(ware) remakes there..

@robertbrown I'd actually willingly pay to play a game and not have to fill out surveys/receive endless amounts of SPAM.

  • A couple of updates...

Anyone played Dyson? It is an indie game that is in development. The full game wont be free (by the sounds of things they've had publishing offers!). Only 6 maps atm, but you can download some more of the site. Fun.

Also a re-write of an old lunch time favourite Liquid War is coming along nicely.

  • BattleField-Heroes!

its a very funny third person shooter and its in open beta =D
