Great idea and I'm glad you linked them, Mike. I'll admit that being a, ahem, lady of leisure (okay, that just sounds bad! :P ), I don't play a lot of free games. I usually have something to play that I've purchased somewhere. Before I met my husband (and had to think about my spending habits), I would buy games I wanted to play but wasn't quite ready yet usually because I was playing something else at the time. But I had to have it! :)

Today, I generally only buy a game when I need a new one but it's great to see there are more free games popping up. The only free game I'm familiar with right now is Silkroad Online. I haven't tried it yet, though I did download and install when I thought I might be getting too bored with Oblivion (GW:Factions intervened) but a good friend really likes it.

  • I usually play Kingdom Of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com). An awesome browser-based MMORPG... It's the only MMORPG I play.

MMORPG. I'll have to check that one out. :)

    And welcome, krustywazoo!

    Edited for fat fingers.

  • Yeah, it's really fun and quirky... EO it ain't!

    And no problem! :)

How could I forget that! I had to stop in recent times (what with lack of time). Anyway, I've added it to the list.

Well if you want MMO there's always Planeshift. I used to play it early early on in development, but haven't had time recently. I'm going to go check out Clouds and Kingdom of Loathing, both look pretty interesting. The only free games I've been playing regularly are Battle for Wesnoth and Armagetron(really fun with alot of friends/family), but here are some others I've tried at one point or another(hopefully someone can find something to their liking):

    VegaStrike - 3d space game
TripleA - Turn based strategy game. Based off the Axis and Allies board game. (OS independent, but requires Java 1.5)
Wing Commander - Privateer Gemini Gold - remake based off the VegaStrike engine.
    No Gravity
Cube - (first person shooter) I checked it out once. It's okay.
Nexuiz - 3d deathmatch (based on the Dark places engine)
Secret Maryo Chronicles - a nice throwback
Tower Toppler - redux of the popular 80s console game
Asteroids 3d - Imagine Wing commander mixed with Asteroids. Not the best, but okay.
Block Attack - Open-source Tetris Attack Action!
TORCS - Something about cars, I can't remember what it stands for. If you're in the mood for some racing? not the best game ever.
Critical Care - Ambulance driving game
Scorched 3d - if you liked Scorched Earth...
Machinations - in development, looks interesting if you like robots...
Anagramarama - if you like anagrams...

Okay, that turned out longer than I expected...
    - Nils

Edit: probably all of those shouldn't be added to the list. ;)

I'm going to second Battle for Wesnoth. That's the simplest, but most addictive game I've ever seen.

    Should or shouldn't? :)

Anyway, thanks for the links - Nexuiz and Cube are both great games.

Nexuis looks great and plays like a dream if you have a fast enough machine. Cube doesn't look so go, but requires very little bandwidth (you can even be downloading your torrents and stuff whilst playing it online) and allows you to, very coolly, edit maps mid game.

I'll add them and a few others on that list in a tick.

Oh and I'm glad someone else plays, Wesnoth. :)

How is Runescape? I've stopped by in the past, and been a bit intrigued by it, but have never given it a try. What's it like?

    Should or shouldn't? :)
Should not. Just add some of the better ones (like you have ;) ).
I agree one of Cube's strengths is how lightweight it is, and the ingame map editing is totally cool.

Oh and I'm glad someone else plays, Wesnoth. :)I'll admit I was a little skeptical at first with some of the screenshots looking how they do, but I find myself becomming addicted. ;) Great game. Not the greatest looking game, but it has it's own style that's quite good actually.

  • Wow, others have seen the light that is Cube. You guys are now my hero's.

I used to play it, but kept getting killed by a cow. :(

    Still I'll add it in.

Maybe I'll come up with a key of some sort, so people know what sort of games what...

Couldn't stop laughing myself - Kept on getting killed on this one bit, after a while I turned the monitor off then took a few steps away. :D

Just saw a new one, Fall of Nations. I haven't tried it out, but it loooks interesting. Kind of a multiplayer-strategy-army managment mix it looks like.

    Cheers,

Fans of Smash T.V. and Total Carnage

I sometimes kick myself for not trying more free games and independant stuff. But since working a dayjob for the past 3 years, gaming has shifted from PC to PS2 to reduce playtime. As most of us, it was often all nighters, especially survival horror that I would only play when the sun was down & lights off. So when waiting for my yearly (or more) flagship titles on the PC to come out, I sometimes dwell on the stuff at Reflexive Entertainment which I got to through this SWARM game I had bought out of a discount bin, GREAT graphics.. but it loops and there were no bosses.. wtf.

Fans of Smash T.V. and Total Carnage, you MUST play Crimsonland. Freakin' messy, and you'll make it out of most levels like a rising phoenix. Passing it on HARD is simply enlighting. It's all about powerups. You get to actually choose one of 5 attack bonuses -- great quick and dirty RPG style management with good looped hard metal music.

no_soap >> Thanks for the Privateer link.

  • I am addicted to OGame it's a space strategy MMO, it's just a text game that can get boring, but the community is great.

Alpha testing, eh? I think they need to adjust their projections a bit. The Future page says it will be released in April 2006. A little dated!

The screens look cool though and completely remind me of WarGames. Not sure if it's the type of game I can play being all old and uncoordinated ;) but I'll be paying attention to this one.

"Remind you"? Geeze! It's called DEFCON, it looks like the screens in War Games meets Tron, and it's spelled out: "Global Thermonuclear War". War Games is one of my all time fave movies. It's just great.. let's play..........

Yup, its totally inspired by wargames, they freely admit that, and it looks like its going to be great to play. Especially if the office mode works properly (Get to work in the morning, start it up, set your inital attack pattern, minimise it to tray, then 8 hours later, a prompt pops up saying "You have nukes!" You maximise it, and finish the game!)

Introversion takes alot of inspiration for movies. The graphics for there previous game Darwinia were inspired by Tron, and their first game Uplink was loosly inspired by hackers. I recommend the demos of their other games, cos I keep re-installing them and re-playing them!
