    Ironic ? don't think so

I think this title doesn't really suit the song, because I don't find the song ironic. It's more a matter of just bad luck. I mean, the events described in the song (rain on your wedding day, a traffic jam when you're already late, etc.) are not examples of irony. They're just bad luck. The one actual, ironic statement in this song is, "As the plane crashed down he thought 'well, isn't this nice'..." This is clearly sarcastic.

But still, this song is very funny and good !

well, I do think these are ironic situations.
like, the first one. the man could be poor his whole life, and when he is old, he get rich, then he dies. he couldn't enjoy his money.
and "rain on your wedding day" is clearly ironic, cause the day of your wedding should be perfect, and imagine that, everything is perfect, is the happiest day of your life, but, suddenly, starts rainnig.
to me, these are exemples of ironic situations.

I'll have to agree with you, really funny and good song.

    i'd rather say it's ironic

What's not so obvious is 'irony' itself. According to some initiative (first-year) literature theory studies of mine, it's something that makes the meaning, the signification, or the intentions blurred, unsettled; usually by confronting them with their opposite.
As this, of course, irony is something associated with the reader, personally. This means in an ironic situation one could see the "reverse" meaning and someone else sees the "straight" meaning of the same particular thing.
So I'd say raining on a wedding day could be ironic, if someone sees the funny break between the conventional stuff (wedding, a most special, perfect day in life) and an opposite of it (rain).
What is surely ironic is (i agree) Mr. Play-It-Safe's death. I think, because, that's what he says, and in that situation, he is the person, recreating the irony.
That's why i think the song's got a fine title. And it is a really funny and good song.

  • The song is Ironic in that it contains hardly any irony~

10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife, isn't actually ironic!
However, if you used a knife and needed a spoon, then then after you used the knife you found a spoon that would be irony.

The easiest way I understand irony!

Some of the situations are not as ironic as they probably should be, but who cares. It's a song. -.- And I love it. <3
