What are the best guitar solos? (not Classic Rock, not Metal)

  • What are the best guitar solos? (not Classic Rock, not Metal)

    I love finding new songs, and I love songs with good guitar solos, but all the lists pretty much only contain songs from the Classic Rock and Metal genres, and when there ARE songs from other genres, it ends up being songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, where it's on the list because the song's famous and not because the solo is anything special.

    I love finding new great solos in musical styles that aren't famous for soloing, and I hope I can learn a few more from you guys.

    Here are a few I like to get this started.

    Grunge

    Burning Brides - If I'm a Man (1:29)

    The song's a really high-energy rocker and the solo just pops up out of nowhere with a whole bunch of guitar effects all over it. It's short, but pretty good.

    Pop Rock

    Weezer - Perfect Situation (0:00)

    I'm a sucker for songs that have a guitar solo right out of the gate, and despite being on one of Weezer's weakest albums, this is a catchy guitar-driven song. It's not really technically impressive, but the solos are very well put-together and it's a joy to listen to.

    Funk

    Johnny "Guitar" Watson - A Real Mother For Ya (2:53)

    Johnny Watson first gained fame as a blues guitarist in the 1950s, so it's not surprising that his Funk Rock songs would have more guitar than his bass-centric 70s contemporaries, and this track doesn't disappoint with a great guitar solo that's almost a minute long.

    Punk

    Iggy Pop & The Stooges - 1969 (1:58)

    Screw the Sex Pistols, you can be talented and still play Punk Rock. 1969 is up-tempo and technically impressive. The guitar solo is blistering and filled with variety, and best of all, it doesn't stop even when the singer decides to start singing again.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    The guitar solos that show up in odd places generally end up being my favorites. A guitar solo in a heavy metal song is par for the course, but a good solo in a punk song really makes you sit up and take notice.
    With Grunge, I'd probably say something by Soundgarden, but that's about all the Grunge I've listened to :P
    Not sure about the rest, with funk I'd have to go with a bass solo .. if that's allowed ? :o
  • well, there's a lot to explore here. mainly, though, i would start here:
    While that's full of great solos, the vast majority of them are solos I've heard before, and the main reason I started this thread was to get exposed some of the more "out there" solos that never make the typical "Top 100" lists. I love finding good new music.
  • Between The Buried And Me - Ants Of The Sky
    It's really long and you need to listen active. There are two solos at 3:45 and the other one at 0:58 in the second video.
    I highly recommend this if you are able to listen to it, there's a lot of screaming but also some singing parts ;). And also some riffs I really like.
    Nice wah action in the Burning Brides song. The other videos were all knee-deep in some youtube system shit, wasn't able to view them.
    Iiro Rantala New Trio - Shit Catapult
    A jazz fusion band with an inspirational lineup: a pianist, a guitarist, and a beatboxer. The guitar solo in this one really contributes a lot of energy to the song.
  • There's a great solo at the end of Faith No More's song called The Last To Know:
  • Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant by Return to Forever. Jazz-rock fusion, Al DiMeola (Return to Forever) solo. I'd put a youtube link but they don't have the studio version although the live one is still good.
    The best guitar solo of all time
    In my opinion the best guitar solo of all time is "Hotel California," I love that song! If you don't agree with me or haven't heard it listen to the live version with mp3 downloads, and you will agree
    My most recent find (and its been a while since I have found one nearly as good as this! definetly over a year) for a really great solo is by Dinosaur Jr. ... Dam I cant believe I have passed this band by for so long!
    Dinosaur Jr. - I dont Wanna Go There
    Solo starts at 4:15
    There was one other great track on the album that featured another great solo almost as good as the first one so here it is for anyone interested.
    Dinosaur Jr. - Said The People
    Solo starts at 3:05 ends at 4:40 and picks back up at 5:55 to finish the song off.
    Sure, it's by Yes, but it's all acoustic.
    For long you live and high you fly
    And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
    And all you touch and all you see
    Is all your life will ever be
  • The current 'best' has to be Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez ]The Mars Volta
    Just about every Incubus guitar solo is amazing (older stuff preferable)
    John Frusciante, Ataxia,A Perfect Circle,Primus, Buckethead, Adrian Belew, & there are many good guitar solos from Wilco.
    El Hefe is maybe the best punk guitarist ever... tell me one guitarist that has a better solo than this one...
  • Something different...
    Hey, maybe this is a new one for you:
    Nikki's Dream
    First listen, then view. I find this guy amazing. He sure knows his axe and tone. And that's all it takes... One of my fav (probably unknown) solos ever.
    I think one the first solos i fell in love with was Bruce's Tears of the Dragon. I still find them very melodic - not extreme, not very technique demanding, but great to listen.
    I also love the solos from Deep Purple - Burn, Satraini's Ceremony, Vai's For the Love of God.
  • I always thought that Robert Fripps guitar solo in David Bowies It's No Game was and is a solo of staggering originality:
