Your all time favourite acoustic/melancholic song

  • Your all time favourite acoustic/melancholic song

Obviously not an easy thing to choose - The one song you hold dearest in the genre.

I'm gonna stick my neck out here:
    Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide

    And it's a cover! Next!

Piano Magic - YOU CAN NEVER GET LOST (WHEN YOU’VE NOWHERE TO GO)

  • I need to get my hands on 'bright baby blues' but that Piano Magic song is gorgeous. Was Jackson Browne on Jools fairly recently?

Radiohead - Creep ... or maybe Muse - Endlessly

  • I'd never heard of Piano Magic either, stefanks, but i just ordered Low Birth Weight on the strength of that song (and the fact that one of them was in Life Without Buildings. Wow! (really))

I recommend >Disaffected< album and >The Opencast Heart< EP. They're my personal favourites.
I think you'll get charmed by Piano Magic!

  • Mirah - Don't Die In Me
    or
    The Microphones - The Moon

Dont make me choose between my Evergreen State loves..Really, the answer to this question changes daily.

  • Amen Omen- Ben Harper

Radiohead's High & Dry, and the acoustic version of Stone Temple Pilot's Plush (both for sentimental reasons).

  • ana_budala: you're right, i have been charmed by piano magic - 'love and music' on disaffected is almost as good as YCNGL. what's that 'after silence' quote from?

  • This is too hard! I can't pick a favourite, but one I really like is Proof. This is a song you can keep listening without getting bored with it. Also Eli, the Barrow Boy is one I fell in love with. Of course the whole album by Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell is lovely, but the song The Circus Is Leaving Town is beautiful!

    Pink Moon
    Full Moon (Demo)

Any Nick Drake is really good, though Pink Moon especially. Also, I just found this new artist called Spider-- some of her songs sounds kind of like a female Nick Drake. She only has one album called The Way to Bitter Lake but it's pretty good... and it's entirely streamable! (Click here to play it now.)

Yeah, same here. Though I like almost any of REM's acoustic performances. I'll take the Rain, Country Feedback, and Fretless are especially good. So are Losing my Religion and Low.

  • I've got two which battle it out.
Firstly, Let's Dance. It's haunting and beautiful.
I also love Woman King, though it's hardly melancholic.

I also love Iron & Wine - Woman King, though it's hardly melancholic.Woman King is a great song. So is Let's Dance. But I'd have to say Woman King, just because it was the first Iron & wine song I ever heard.

  • proof is kloot's best song, imo.

elliot smith - pitseleh is very pretty.

  • Oh My Sweet Carolina

heard a busker playing this once and stopped to listen for the whole song (no idea what he thought of me, although I gave generously)

actually, Call Me On Your Way Back Home is another contender for this (same artist, same album). I'm sure there's many others, but - as has been said - it's damn near impossible to choose just one.

Oh man, this genre is fabulous. Three lovely swedish contributions (picking a favourite is impossible):
    Like you said
    A Very Special Christmas
    Tonight

    Jeff Buckley - Opened Once
    The Frames - Dissapointed
    Thåström - Karenina

    Could go on forever.
    Cheers.
