    EN brunch - Development

Further improvements are closely connected with your donations too.

    Here is to-do list:

    - User defined sizes and colors
    - Userbars
    - Localization (en,ru,pl)
    - Music database improvment
    - Music database display (done!)
    - Hosting replacement

    What about your ideas?

  • Could you insert a list of what genre you've classed each artist in our profiles under, or at least some way to point out any unknowns?

do you mean the next scheme?

artist_name (playcount)(matched genres/styles) - is used on pie chart image
    or
make a form where you enter artist name and script shows genres/styles artist plays - outputs as a text

  • Either way works. I like the first one a bit more.

I think, this way will cause too much text at one diagramm. Pie chart won't be easy-to-interpret (easy-to-read). Legend should bring max necessary information from min text.
For example, imagine, that your country pie will be extended with top5 artists of each country. Will it be easy-to-read?
That's why separate form is more acceptable.. to my mind

  • Well, I would like it if you could place it on the same page we see the preview image on, rather than having to lookup artists individually.

Alternatively, since the genres are color-coded, you could color the artists the same color as the genre.

And will we see more genres in the future?

    Nice idea

Music database already contains 924 names. My problem - how to arrange these names according to music hierarchy. My knowledges aren't so deep in all genres so I cannot do it by myself.

  • Well that's why you started this group, yes? Get a database updating thread going.

well, now you can see my database in HTML

  • Oh yeah, is the entire library taken when generating the pie chart?

    yep!

  • Can we have pop added as one of the genres?

what styles and substyles does it have?

  • Good question... Not quite a real genre if you deconstruct it, but I have no other terms for it. Pop itself evolves constantly...

Pop rock, dance, and RnB might be good starts.

Hip hop/rap is also something I think you should add.

I have no idea, 1KStyles won't work properly if I duplicate some names in other cathegories. I think it's better to leave it in genre-style-substyle terms

First, let me say I love your pie charts.

I've found that a few of the substyles you have don't really match well with the styles/genres you have them listed under. The biggest one (to me at least) is JPop, which is listed as Electronic Music/House. I feel it goes much better under Rock/Pop Rock, which is where similar substyles like Korean Pop and Pop already are. Very little JPop music that I hear is electronic, and it kinda throws off my charts since ~95% of my "electronic" music is JPop (with the remaining 5% disco).

You should also look into fixing font support for extended characters in artist names. I have quite a few Japanese artists in my top lists, and the names come out as blank boxes in the pie chart. The Russian composers come out fine, so this seems to be a font problem and not an encoding problem, but I could be mistaken.
