    Display Track Data In Winamp

Is there a way to get Winamp to display the track data (artist - title) from the last.fm stream?

Winamp only displays the name of stream, such as:
    last.mp3?Session=6e814ceb76764...

I like your poetry, but I hate your poems.
  • Yeah, it'd be nice, and it's been suggested before. :)

Wouldn't it make strange things happen if songs are being added to your profile by last.fm and an audioscrobbler plugin at the same time? By the looks of it the only thing stopping plugins submitting is the lack of track details...

Under the assumption that one user has only one player running, last.fm could disable profile logging if the user is submitting audioscrobbler data or vice versa.

I suspect the music industry would try to stop last.fm from transmitting metadata because that could be used to automatically extract complete song files.

On the other hand, this should already be possible in most cases with heuristic song boundary detection and identification via
    musicbrainz.

  • Audioscrobbler doesn't record streams. :)

The only reason we don't do this is for the reasons that gefla mentioned - it makes it harder to rip the stream. We'd rather our finite resources were taken up with real people actually listening, than streamrippers who have no musical taste...

Also if labels are paying last.fm to place their music on the radio, then they need to be satisfied that it's going to a real live person as opposed to some bit of software.

    Streamripping is bad, mmkay?

Should be a great idea to display information in winamp!

    :D

I agree with Russ. Something this good shouldn't be spoilt.

  • Might it be possible to develop a Last.FM Winamp skin that features an embedded version of the popup player? The song name could then be displayed, but it would not help somebody with stream ripping - no more than having the popup player open does. This would also allow us to use the Love, Skip, and Ban buttons within Winamp.

    Exactly what we need

    +1
I keep my browser (mozilla) open and reduce its window until it only shows the "Playing" box, but it's not as "clean" as gadgetchannel's idea would be.

    I got it!!!!

Today I found out how to display the Pop-up Player (thus track data) in the winamp minibrowser!

For all who are not familiar with the minibrowser, it's Winamp's built-in web-browser that, by default, will display additional artist/album/track information based on the info of the current track shown in the playlist window. Since a Last.FM stream doesn't display any track data in Winamp's playlist window this default behavior isn't useful for Last.FM listeners. The good thing is that the default behavior can be easily changed. Here's how:

    -Close Winamp
-Go to the Winamp installation folder
    (normally C:/Program Files/Winamp)
-Double click on Winamp.ini to open it in your text editor
-Find the line that starts with last_shorturl=
(it should be one of the longer lines)
-Replace the url after last_shorturl= with this one: http://www.last.fm/popup.php
    -Save changes to Winamp.ini
-Open Winamp (by starting your Last.FM station) and press Alt+T in Winamp to open the Media Library.
Select 'Now Playing' in the menu at the left to view the minibrowser if you don't see it already.

Note: If you get an error about ActiveX Controls then you should go to Options|Preferences|Media Library|Now Playing Options and uncheck Do not allow web content to execute or download Java/Javascript scripts and ActiveX controls.

Note 2: If you keep getting the message "WAITING FOR STREAM..." then click on the "More..." button at the bottom of the Winamp Media Library window and select "Open URL...". Fill in "last.fm" and press Enter. Now login via the minibrowser and start your music station.

This is tested on the 'Full' version of Winamp 5 which includes the Media Library but it may work on Winamp 2 too.

    Here's a screenshot

BTW: The Winamp minibrowser automatically refreshes every time a new song starts!

Have fun! (let me know if you have any problems)

    Very good indeed.
This should be added to the FAQ section, as the question is often raised by people believing last.FM should work like shoutcast radios.

  • Your idea works really well. I made a slight change when I set it up. I changed the url to http://www.last.fm/popupmini.php?mode=''
This is the url the mini popup player uses and means the minibrowser doesn't need to be as big. If I hide the media library folders bar on the left (I hardly ever use it) the window only needs to be as wide as the player itself.

    Great stuff!

Thanks for bringing this workaround to my attention. I really like working with this winamp integrated stuff.

However, the keyboard shortcuts don't work in the minibrowser, do they? Any tricks here?

    Thanks, Bjoern

@gadgetchannel: Good suggestion to use the mini-popup url (by the way, http://www.last.fm/popupmini.php is sufficient) especially for those who use a (smaller) Winamp 2 style skin.

EDIT: Skipping in Winamp is not recommended as it puts strain on the Last.FM software.

    woah there . . . .

SKIPPING IN WINAMP IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. because it actually disconnects/reconnects you to our stream server. that means the track you just listened won't get registered, not even as skipped and you want to tell us that. also reconnecting to our server increases the strain on our software, opening/closing database connection and so on.

I have linked this thread from the FAQ now, but it would be cool if you censored your SKIP tip as we do not want to recommend this behaviour to all our users, this is not the way it is supposed to be done. I hope you understand.

Both kinds of music: Rock & Roll - SFTRI
  • What's the point of registering skips, other than for label services, if it has no affect on ratings?

If it strains your software, I won't be doing it. Perhaps I should stop pausing, too, but not until I move out of my annoying roommate's house. :)

I edited my post but I'm not sure if I understand what you mean with strain on last.fm's software. I mean, when I skip via the web interface it often takes very long for the song to skip. Isn't that caused by strain?

I tried Winamp 5.03 at first, but it didn't work either however it's still ver 5.x.
(5.03 didn't have an option "Do not allow ~~~ Java/Javascript scripts and ActiveX controls" in preferences.
So I upgrade mine latest version (5.08d for now), then it works fine now.
I don't know when that option came up though, versions which cannot cntrol this option may not use this...?
