iPod not scrobbling but iTunes is?

  • iPod not scrobbling but iTunes is?

I've come across a weird issue where iTunes 8.1 is allowing scrobbling to my account but the iPod scrobbler stopped working out of nowhere.

I've made sure that I updated the LastFM plugin, and noticed that several long groups of characters (iPod serial numbers/identifiers I take it?) appear in Options > iPod in the LastFM menu under "Known Ipods". One of them showed my username to the right of it, and the others had none. Thinking that I needed to somehow refresh things there, I clicked the "Clear User Associations" button below. This emptied out the whole list.

LastFM asked me to restart iTunes, which I did. A pop-up tab came up on the taskbar, saying that it was setting up iPod scrobbling. When done, I went back to the LastFM Options > iPod, and sure enough, a serial number re-appeared. However, now my username does not appear to the right of the serial number anymore.

I'm not sure where the problem lies. I am definitely using the latest versions of everything. I am on Win XP SP3.

Enable Scrobbling is definitely checked on the main window and in Options > iPod Scrobbling. Confirm iPod Scobbles is also checked, if that matters.

Playing songs out of iTunes itself works fine in sending songs to my playlist.

  • Also, I have only ever connected one iPod to this machine.

    Very frustrating

I'm having almost the exact same problem: iTunes scrobbling perfectly, but iPod not scrobbling at all, or very strangely.

Usually (before updating to 8.1), I would just connect the iPod and it would scrobble the tracks recently played. Nothing has changed with my settings, apart from downloading new version, and now it doesn't scrobble at all. When I go to manually scrobble, it only selects like 3 songs (out of 50 or so played) to scrobble.

Soooo frustrating! Spent 2 days trying to fix this now.

  • Also of note - today I completely uninstalled both apps and re-installed them. Latest versions of both iTunes 8.1 and Last.FM software as of 3/16/09.

Everything seemed to follow through the right way, until once again I connected the iPod and once again the Options>iPod window doesn't show my username next to the Known iPods. In fact, it somehow also added an iPhone in there too - I don't own one and have never connected one to this machine.

Same again with me. I think it always said iPhone in my case, even though I don't have one. Mine scrobbled today - a total of 5 songs out of approximately 120 listen to in the past 48 hours.

So frustrating... even more frustrating is that the owners of the site/software don't seem to care and think it's ok for a "support" section to merely be a bunch of frustrated users telling each other what their problems are. I think it might be time for some of Last.fm's advertisers to be informed of the shoddy site it has been associated with...

  • Whoops.

    Nevermind.

  • I've spent too much time over the last two weeks trying to solve similar problems with both of my iPods. For months and months, everything worked great. Now, all of a sudden, it can't find my library. Then when it does, it tries to scrobble every time I've listened to a song ever, rather than just the recent listen. I've cleared the user associations, had them come back wrong, cleared them again. Then it says I have an iPhone, which I don't. And it makes no difference whether I mark my iPod as automatically or manually managed. Regular iTunes scrobbles are fine, knock on wood.

I have read through the FAQs and sticky posts and have yet to see a satisfactory solution. And like BrisJamin said, it's really just users talking to each other here. Very few posts are addressed by someone associated with the site. :(

  • I just got a new iPod and am having a similar problem, however my old iPod still scrobbles just fine. My new iPod touch however refuses to scrobble anything despite having reset my iPod list a few times over. :[

Having troubles scrobbling my ipod tracks since the new update to iTunes as well... :( Playing them on iTunes seems to work, but the ipod scrobbling itself is not working. I'm using Vista, so it's not an XP-isolated problem...Anyone find a solution to this?

I should probably add that I have the latest versions of the last.fm software as well as iTunes.

  • Yep. My dumb ipod nano thinks it's an iphone and it doesn't scrobble. So annoying! I was away for a week and had lots of tracks played and now they're gone. And whatever I do I can't get this thing to scrobble anything. Oh, Itunes/WMP scrobble fine.

I have exactly the same problem. Since I downloaded the latest Itunes, my Ipod won't scrobble.. The scrobbler can't find any scrobbles, but I listened to a lot of music in the last couple of days. I have an 120 gb Ipod classic and the latest versions of Itunes and scrobbler.

  • Having the same problem... why the hell did I decide to get the new iTunes version.

Okay so is there a solution for this ??
I am almost sure that the problem is with iTunes because I updated iTunes on my laptop, which won't scrobble my iPod, but my old computer with older iTunes will.

    Very frustrating !!

I have the new lastfm version installed as well, but I still keep getting the same problem some people have here. It recognizes it as an iPhone and thus won't scrobble the tracks on it.. Help? :(

Lend me your brain, I'm building an idiot
  • I am having the exact same problems! Is there anyone out there that knows how to fix this?

  • Yep, I'm having the same problem as well. I tried to scrobble manually too and nothing. I have an extra serial number, well it's actually two of the exact same numbers, only one says iPod with my username an the other says iPhone with nothing. iTunes scrobbles fine.

However, I don't have the new iTunes, only the new scrobbler.

    DX Bug bug bug.

New iTunes, new Last.fm client, mine actually doesn't say it's an iPhone but it's not working.

  • Grrrr mine is doing the same! iTunes 8.1, new Last.fm client (I think), it is very hit and miss. Sometimes it ignores my ipod completely, sometimes it recognises recent plays when I plug in my ipod (classic 80GB, recent version) but it doesn't appear on my page when I scrobble them.

    SO ANNOYING.

  • I listen to music on my ipod a lot, far more than I do on computer. Oh well, I guess it shouldn't be such a big deal if I can't scrobble anymore, I mean, what does it really matter. But I've got used to scrobbling the ipod and it's nice.

my ipod is still looking like an ipod, but i'm getting the same problem where it won't scrobble ipod plays. i tried to reconnect it and it recognized two tracks.

latest version of itunes, latest scrobbler. vista.

  • When I connect my iPod with my laptop, it synchronizes with iTunes without any problem, but the iScrobbler doesn't do anything. If I manually try to scrobble, the iScrobbler only reports how many songs there are on my iPod. This is after installing the latest version of iTunes and scrobbler. I also use Vista.

i had the same problem, but i also had iSproggler which you can download here http://www.last.fm/group/iSproggler+Users and i just scrobbled my plays from there (although i had to select 'Update iPhone/iPod Touch' even though I have a Nano. try scrobbling using that, it might work!
