Tracks have been scrobbling twice when listening on iTunes

did you check the known issues, especially the ipod/itunes related ones?

I also have been getting duplicate scrobbles using iTunes under Windows 7 64 bit and I have read the known problems.

What happens is that when I play tracks, they are scrobbled correctly. Sometimes, when I restart iTunes I will find that some of the tracks get scrobbled a second time. Sometimes the date/time stamps are the same, sometimes the duplicate scrobbles have a date/time stamp a couple of minutes after the original/correct scrobble. The tracks that are duplicated are not necessarily contiguous. Up till now, us few as one or two or as many as fifteen to twenty scrobbles could be duplicated at any given time.

I at first thought this behavior was tied to syncing my iPod, but that has proven to not be the case. This is an intermittent problem. I get duplicate scrobbles a couple times one day and then go several days with no problems.

As I said in my post, I at first thought that the double scrobbling was linked to syncing my iPod as I first noticed it under that circumstance, and I was aware of the issue in the faq you referenced. However, over time it has become clear that the issue is not related to syncing my ipod because the double scrobbling happens more often than not when I am not syncing my iPod nor when I even have my iPod attached to the computer.

The tracks that have duplicate scrobbles are usually those that are from the immediately previous listening session, although some duplicate scrobbles are from farther back in my listening history. I will play a track in iTunes and when that track gets scrobbled, one or more earlier tracks get re-scrobbled, sometimes with the exact same date and time stamp as the original scrobble and sometime with a time stamp of a few minutes later, as I mentioned in my previous post. Also, again as I mentioned, the duplicate tracks are not always consecutive.

There is no iPod involvement in this process that I can see. My iPod may not even have been connected recently. Also, I cannot remember any of the tracks that I played on my iPod ever having been scrobbled twice, only tracks played directly through iTunes.

This is also an intermittent problem, and I have so far been so far unsuccessful in replicating it, having it happen when I want it to happen.

When I notice the duplicate scrobbles, I go into the Recently Listened list and delete the duplicates.

I have to manually delete each repeated song. This only happens just for iTunes. When i scrobble with my iPhone, it's fine :S

Gah, any responses? I have to waste a few minutes of my life manually deleting all the double scrobbled tracks! Here's an example...

I occasionally have this problem, although most of the time I end up with duplicate scrobbles they are actual duplicates and deleting the dup does not delete the original. But you can't tell just by looking at the chart which problem you have: actual dups or a second scrobble (which adds to the count) tied to the first as you have mentioned.

I think these are two problems, although they may be connected.

Just an update. The problem is still occurring, but the behavior of the Last.fm client has changed. I haven't downloaded any updates, so I don't know why the client's behavior has changed, but it has.

In the past, tracks the client thought hadn't already been scrobbled would be scrobbled, creating false duplicate entries as described above which I then had to manually delete. Although this still happens from time to time, more often than not I now get a box with a list of tracks the client thinks need scrobbling. I can uncheck any tracks that have already been scrobbled and then click on the "Scrobble" button to actually submit the scrobbles. The client is still thinking scrobbled tracks haven't been scrobbled as before, but now it is often giving me the chance to correct the entries before they are submitted.

Have you tried the beta version of the new client to see if this resolves this issue?

I originally didn't want to play with the beta version, but I will and after using it for a few days I will report my experiences back here.

Duplicate scrobbles from your iPod may come from listening to the same track via iTunes while your iPod is connected. We read your playcount updates, and iTunes will update your iPod playcount while it's connected, thus causing the scrobbler to read those plays as iPod scrobbles. Does this sound like what might be happening?
