Last.fm and Audioscrobbler on Metafilter

Last.fm Limited is a company governed by the laws of the UK, whose laws on broadcasting music are much more sensible than those of the US.

We hold the rights to all the songs we broadcast. We have obtained legal advice, and we are convinced that our operations are both legal, and not in violation of our contracts with the MCPS/PRS.

Incidentally, we're currently working on transferring the Audioscrobbler part of the business to a seperate entity, Audioscrobbler Ltd, so if Last.fm does get into problems, we'll be unaffected.

It's really great to see that AS and Last.fm are so sensibly and legally run. Looks as though everything is licenced and your backs are covered, in fact for many users it would be advisable to delete their illegally downloaded music and listen to the legally licensed stuff on last.fm!!!

    things i've learned today:

    1) the guys running these sites have thought everything through and plan on sticking around for a long time. which is fortunate for us.
    2) there's more people than 2 running these sites. perhaps a lot more.
    3) getting technical is dangerous when all these people are around ;)
    4) i sometimes sound like i'm sucking up when i just say what i think. i was (and still am) amazed by last.fm, for pretty much the reason mathowie said. i have some technical problem with it but that's for another thread.

thanks RNR, though i'm not entirely crystal. rather than trying to understand it all, i think i'll just carry on listening to music if that's ok :)

i can see where mathowie (you're the guy who posted the blog this is linked to right?) is coming from, but we have the BPI (british phonographic industry). they don't seem quite as nasty. (hopefully we're not just lagging behind america like usual :p)

AudioScrobbler is the half i care about, so it's good to see they'll be seperated legally (don't change anything else please!), was thinking earlier today it would be bad if it all tanked due to last.fm, and i see even less reason why AS would upset anyone..

    the team

Should do a bio's page really. here's a summary of 'the team':

RJ (aka audioscrobbler) - Web monkey, general hacker
    Russ - General hacker/monkey, + sysadmin
Felix (aka RNR, aka Kaminari) - Web monkey, other ops and company stuff, lots of other misc stuff
Martin (aka martinten) - Label liason, PR, HR, Customer Services, paralegal
Mischa (too many nicks to list) - Streaming architecture dude, responsible for all things streaming and radio related
Micheal - Off-duty due to recently becoming a father.

One day we'll make a page with comedy mugshots and more info ;)

    Information wants to be beer.

Thanx for the list. The only one on the list I didn't figure out by paying attention to things was Michael, which is understandable as he has been "off-duty". Parenthood is a wonderful experience. Please pass on our congratulations.

And I would like to thank you and the whole team for a wonderful pair of sites. It's really amazing what you have accomplished here and I look forward to the future evolution of music on the Internet here.

is this all legal? part 6,000,000, then we shall stop . . .

yoyo, just a few more things. first of all yes we are in the UK as mentioned. Then we met the BPI last year quite a bit. they said they like what we do, as we string it all up on giving indie labels a seat on the table, but they said we shouldn't tell anyone that they said that ;-)

MCPS/PRS just got back to us saying thanks for the last payment, here is the license till December, cheers mate.

The thing with personal radio vs. other, i.e. my.mp3.com is that you can't tell what song is coming on. Martin posted over in the thread on last.fm a quote from our license: "We can't play more than 2 songs by the same artist in a row", well, actually our software doesn't repeat artists for 14 songs, at least it is supposed to (mischa!). it works I think. so this tiny ascpect makes all the difference. you can still listen to your favourite music, but it's not on-demand, so there is not trouble. I was wondering why other sites aren't that clever. well, I guess everybody is scared in the US ;-)

There you go, your audiosctrobbler songs on personal radio forever pending we have it in the catalogue, which is growing fast. 25,000 new tracks in a weeks time. . . . then only thing left to say is, enjoy the music!

Both kinds of music: Rock & Roll - SFTRI

I'd help out for nothing apart from knowing that i'm helping this awesome site.

By the way are you looking for coding help? If you are i'd be happy to help

    To stop plugins submitting...

I stopped my plugin (WMP) submitting by instructing it to use a proxy server (with a fake address in the form 10.0.0.4 / port 4480 - I think you can type any value you like as long as it is NOT valid). As the plugin did not find that proxy server, it started working offline and built a nice cache file.
Once the system was back online, I entered the correct proxy address (because I am actually using one; if you don't, just disable the corresponding option) and the cache file was submitted.

Woops forgot I changed my password.

  • as this has become a general airing things thread...

what's happening with the blus cross status?
i have my cross back now, but the actual privilages don't seem to be there (like the tracks and artists from your list being in bold on other pages), is anyone else having this prob or just me?

i emailed/messaged rj but have heard narthing... is this just a temporary glitch or am i suffering alone?

    sorry to gripe! (wah)

  • Check your preferences. I found my "Highlight Matches" setting disabled the other day. It may take a little bit for it to work again, too. Hope that helps. :)
