    September 9 site update

    Hi all,

As you've probably noticed, we just released a site update. Here's what's new:

New header. We've updated the look and layout of the Last.fm header. Without significantly changing the overall height, we've added more room for new sections (more on that in a minute), space to post site messages and announcements, and integrated our new search engine. We'd love to hear what you think, but if you don't like it please give it a day or two. We hope it'll grow on you.

The community hub. There's a new section in the header: Community. It's the people that make Last.fm great, and we wanted to give that the recognition it deserves. This is the new home of user and group search, and also provides stats on the community's listening (including real-time scrobbling rates!) and help for hooking up your Last.fm profile to other websites. We've got more community and friend features planned over the next few months, so keep your eyes peeled for further updates.

Our new music search is out of beta. If you're a subscriber you'll have seen our deluxe search interface, and maybe even let us know what you think. Now it's ready for prime-time, and everyone can use it. There's some snazzy autocomplete when you start typing, and the search results page has been overhauled to help you find what you're looking for.

Minor improvements to our web services for developers. The artist.getInfo, album.getInfo, and track.getInfo all get an optional 'username' parameter. If supplied, you'll get the playcounts for that user included in the web services response. We've also extended tag.getTopArtists to take multiple tags. This lets you bundle multiple calls into one. Expect to see more of this in the future.

The usual boatload of bugfixes, including buy buttons not displaying properly, the logged-out homepage 'search' box taking you straight to a login page, only 50 items in the weekly snapshot charts, no 'play loved tracks' button for some users, and outdated details in the music manager.

This was a big release but we're not resting on our laurels – we're already hard at work on the next round of improvements. Let us know what you think, and we'll see you back here in 2 weeks for the next update.

Positive, very positive - the new header looks brilliant, but I need some time to get my sight adapted to it. :)

  • Sweet looks! Thanks!

actually, looks rather stunning in the red!! just realised what you've done - it's not grungey paintbrush anymore. it's all metallic and that.

  • Yep, we're aware of the missing black headers. We'll have it fixed soon!

I was quite surprised on the update, I was just doing my usual browising addiction through last.fm, clicked a link and suddenly it was a new look on the site xD

New header reminds me of the classic, old layout.

    Bring back the old header.

The new one makes my eyes bleed.

  • Header looks great but doesn't work on my Firefox. I can only see it properly on Safari.

I'm using Firefox version 2.0.0.20 on Mac OS X, it looks like this on my firefox:

I've tried cleaning up cookies and everything but it still looks like that.

Community - once we've seen it's all about the community, the whole great big banner across the top becomes redundant. A bit like "write your first journal" when some of us have already written a fair few...

I'd prefer that space used for searching people and groups. That would be so useful. I know I'd use it a lot.

Appreciate you need to explain things to newcomers, but we actually use the site on a regular basis, so we need it to work too.

It would be just as good to put the banner explaining how to pronouce scrobble etc across the bottom of the page.

Everything else - jammy tastic. Great work. :)

  • By sheer luck I just logged in to get some new recommendations and I saw the new header. It's really good, I hated that grungy crap you used to force onto the top of my screen but this new header is so much better - much respect guys and gals.

Where's this new "search" thing you mention? I don't quite know where to look for it.

I actually like this combination. But oh well.

I also like how the new header spans the whole page (previously, it would be as wide as the page, so on a widescreen you'd see two big area's of wasted space). It'd be nice to have the whole page scale, but I guess that's not an easy thing to do.

While I prefer the non-broken header, this broken version has something going for it.
