"Track X is the Same as Track Y"

"Track X is the Same as Track Y"

I'd like the ability to correct tags or album lists and to somehow say: "This is the same version of that song".

For example:
Björk has recorded a Song called "Hyperballad".

Somehow, someone tagged his MP3 "Hyper-ballad", so there are 2 tracks in her tracklist, but it's the same song.

Another Example:
Close to the Edge has 3 tracks.
1. Close to the Edge
2. And You and I
3. Siberian Khatru

Yes, the first two songs do have subchapters called (I. The Solid Time of Change, II. Total Mass Retain, III. I Get Up…), but very obviously, only very very few people tagged their MP3 with the subchapter titles.

More likely this version is the album track as tagged by most listeners:
http://www.last.fm/music/Yes/_/Close+to+the+Edge
so these two songs are the same.

Maybe it can be automated if - let's say:10% of the group's listeners say : Song X = Song Y to prevent someone intentionally wrong-tagging tracks.

You know that your client (since version 1.4.0) fingerprints all your tracks and sends the data to last.fm
That data is used to build a database that at a later time might be used to scrobble tracks based on that info.

The blog has at least for posts about the idea and gathered data.

Do I have to start the last.FM Software to send the fingerprints while listening or is scrobbling with the foobar2000 plugin sufficient?

If you are using a standalone plugin, you are not submitting fingerprints. If you are using the client and have that running in the background, your track will be fingerprinted. Note: this only works for MP3's at the moment, and only once for each track.

I'd like it if there was a spot where you could send to Last.fm that song X is the same as song Y. I'm really tired of seeing good songs like U + Ur Hand or Potential Breakup Song not getting their recognition because people don't tag right. For example, people will tag as U & Ur Hand or U Ur Hand or You and You're Hand, etc and people tag the other as Potential Break Up Song or The Potential Breakup Song etc. So, I hope the fingerprinting thing can be put to good use very soon.
