    Flattr integration

    Hey there,

I want to suggest to implement flattr to last.fm, so that last.fm users can easily show their love to their favorite artists. There seemed to be no entry about it in the forum, so I would like to start the discussion here.

Flattr is a micropayment service, where you pay a fixed monthly fee (2-100 Euros), which is then divided by the number of things you click during a month. Some call it the 'like button that matters' (but see more here).

Flattr offers an API to easily implement it in other services. There is already a way to easily flattr Wikipedia content, podcasts and youtube videos. In germany we have already some podcasters who are financing their work with flattr (sorry, Link only in german. But you can see the Euros).

You can easily create a flattr account and put a flattr button to anything you create in content on the internet. A quick search in the last.fm forum revealed, that two people already did this in their comments.

I understand that last.fm already offers artists to submit their music directly to get a share of the profit, everytime their songs are listened to. But I would love to boost this with a flattr payment every now and then for my favorite tracks. You could give artists the option to connect their flattr account to their last.fm content, so that people can flattr them if they want to. It is even possible to think about a auto-flattr feature, so that last.fm flattrs everything I 'love' or listen to automatically every month, if the artist uses flattr.

I must admit that since I use last.fm, and a spotify like service, I barely buy CDs or MP3s anymore and I already talked about this at a different place. But nontheless I look for other ways to pay a little, when I enjoy their music. Flattr is the way to go, because I don't have to worry about how much I spend each month.

I really like the idea and would love to see this in last.fm. Last.fm for me ever was a pioneer in media consumption, so I'm confident that you understand the benefits of this idea and think about it.

    Best wishes
    Fabian

fairly sure this was suggested years ago (albeit with a different service probably).
may well be a good idea.

  • great idea, love it. I mean I (still, after all these years) love last.fm and would love to kick this off, anyone in the staff picking this up for an Alumnus?

    Flattr integration

Hey just want to understand the suggestion here. Are you asking for the ability for an artist to add a Flattr account to their user profile?

I think it is an awesome idea. We are working on some upgrades to the Music Manager application and I'll add this suggestion to the list of things we're looking at. We have a pretty full plate for the winter and spring already but I like the idea of giving fans a way to pay artists directly and we should support this.

We're also looking at ways to support other kinds of Direct-To-Fan sales from artists (Kickstarter, TopSpin, Bandcamp, Etsy to name a few) and I'm wondering which other services do people love to use to contribute to their favorite artists.

The idea is to let artists choose the providers in their Music Manager profile and then display these promotions on the artist's pages.

Add then to this thread and I'll promise to keep checking back this week to see what services people would love to see us support.

    Any other suggestions?

What other platforms do people use to pay artists for their work.

That was mentioned a while ago. Seemed to be support for it then, as well.

As for alternatives, I buy CDs and music files, often inspired by the music played through Last.fm. (Though I have to admit, some CDs are second hand - a number are no longer in active release.)

    (Liked the "gigs" comment B-)

Did I hear that right? Mondegreens - for the misheard word.

appears to be far more snippy/snotty than I intended it to.
