Does last.fm really support SOPA or PIPA?

My browser just told me that last.fm supports SOPA or PIPA, is this true?

  • Would be extremely disappointed if true.

CBS Interactive owns last.fm, and supports SOPA, so yes, by extension, last.fm also supports SOPA.

  • Ok, so I just cancelled my subscription. I've been paying them for a long time now, not because I've beem using premium features, just because I really liked the site idea and everything. Now it's over until they change their mind (which will probably won't happen since someone else owns them now :( ).

Wow, CBS interactive will destroy one of their own sites with this support. As far as I know, people can give links on the forums of last.fm which means that Last.fm could be shut down.

  • I'm cancelling my subscription because of this too.

    I sincerely hope not.

I love keeping track of my music. I hardly listen to music without scrobbling it. But if Last.fm supports SOPA I WILL stop and I WILL tell my like-minded friends to stop as well.

    Ditto.

I'll be deleting my account once I do a little more research on this and verify it's in fact the case.

I guess Last.fm doesn't really have a choice in the matter. Plus, they already tend to block private messages sent with certain links in them, and that sort of thing. What does it mean for Last.fm, other than adding a few more checks to their spam filter?

As it was mentioned above, CBS Interactive, a division of CBS Corporation, owns Last.fm. Another division of CBS Corporation is CBS Records, which would be directly (and seemingly positively) affected by SOPA and PIPA. So of course CBS Corporation is in favor of both pieces of legislation. However, I very much doubt the Last.fm team - as individuals, or as a company - actively support either bill. Still, seeing as they are a subsidiary of CBS Corp., I wouldn't expect any staff members to come out and say they aren't in favor of the bills.

If you want to scrobble your music, you can do it with free software:
    Libre.fm
They also have a radio with freely-licensed artists.

I think these guys are technically based in the UK, but owned by CBS.

There needs to be a statement on this very soon or even old-school audioscrobbler people like me are going to leave.

  • Disappointing. :<

I have been concerned since last.fm sold to CBS and now I can see that it was completely warranted.

What a shame, "Social Revolution" my ass. Does anyone know another service similar to Lastfm with audioscrobbles and stuff?

    @gEEEERa

If you want a good radio: Deezer.com

If you want on-demand playback and playlists: Spotify.com

If you want to listen to albums by smaller bands: Bandcamp.com

If you want a forum and personal recommendations: Reddit.com (examples: LetsTalkMusic, ListenToThis and Record Store)

  • What a disappointment...
Is there a good alternative to last.fm?

I think last.fm is quite independent of CBS-decisions and CBS still wants to make money, so...maybe they are stuck...

erm, SOPA has been shelved, but PIPA is still in the paperworks. This is why a number of sites (like Wikipedia.org and Reddit.com) will black-out tomorrow in protest against it.

Statement by Wikipedia about the block-outWe depend on a legal infrastructure that makes it possible for us to operate. And we depend on a legal infrastructure that also allows other sites to host user-contributed material, both information and expression. For the most part, Wikimedia projects are organizing and summarizing and collecting the world’s knowledge. We’re putting it in context, and showing people how to make to sense of it.

But that knowledge has to be published somewhere for anyone to find and use it. Where it can be censored without due process, it hurts the speaker, the public, and Wikimedia. Where you can only speak if you have sufficient resources to fight legal challenges, or if your views are pre-approved by someone who does, the same narrow set of ideas already popular will continue to be all anyone has meaningful access to.
