Thanks for that. I think sometimes admins don't understand that even the announcement of no news is much better than silence. Acknowledgment itself is a plus.

I'm reminded of the recent thread about the whole Warner Bros. controversy. While I understand you couldn't comment on specifics, a simple, "We're aware of the issue, but can't comment at this time" would have been much appreciated. Russ eventually did something like that, but it seemed to take forever.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that a great many of the complaints were not about the issue itself, but the lack of response. I mean that can really, really piss people off, in that they think they're just being completely ignored. (Logic suggests you guys were probably reading the thread, but that's not enough.)

Not putting this on you, but admins in general often don't appreciate just how pissed off people get at being ignored. Even if you have nothing significant to say, it's valuable just to show you're listening. I'll take a "can't comment" or "nothing new to report" any day over complete silence, and I'm sure most users would agree.

Or at the very least have one of your mods convey the message. Again, anything just to show people they're not being ignored. I like at least most of the admins on this site, but this is one area where I think they're severely lacking. Communication is invaluable, even when you don't have anything significant to say.

    @_Tarkus_ - spot on.

U.G.L.Y. - changing the face of music, one artist at a time.
there are some things pngs can't fix. for everything else, there's pngoptimizer.

My avatar is lonely and longing for new friends.

Because they were uploaded before the new resizing code, and thus, the different sizes are cached, at least on the live site.

IOW, they're only resized once, and then are cached. So if they're cached under the old code, they work, but new uploads are resized using the new code.

On the beta site, I don't think any animated avatars work, because it uses different sizes, and thus, uses the new, buggy resizing code.

Now if you upload an avatar that doesn't need to be resized, at least on your profile, and it still doesn't work there, I don't even have a theory for that. Other than maybe they covert them to their own code, even when resizing isn't necessary.

sorry but your theory isn't correct. i uploaded my avatar a year ago and it doesn't work

    I've been talking drunken gibberish...

Another one reporting in, I had a working GIF avatar and I wanted to change it to another GIF today, it only showed one frame, so I changed to my old GIF, and the same thing happened....it's frozen. pffffff

That's odd, and I believe you. I'm still not ready to dismiss my theory, though. Perhaps your cached avatars got lost somehow. I don't personally know of any old animated avatars that stopped working, including group avatars. On the live site, that is.

Since we've been getting "nothing new" updates lately, proving the admins aren't ignoring this issue, I'd love for one of them to address this. I don't mind being wrong, but I can't think of any other explanation.

wow, I don't know about how is last.fm programmed, but me being an advanced web developer can't believe how long is taking to get this issue solved.

    is it something about performance/bandwidth?

what's the real deal on allowing animated gifs just like it did before?

c'mon guys, shouldn't be that hard. I bet they are just ignoring this because they have more important issues to fix on the site than this... otherwise I don't see why it wasn't solved yet, when last.fm was working perfectly before GIFs stopped working.

By guess is most of the programmers are busy with the beta site. (NO animated avatars work there, but it's probably not a priority at this time.)

Good question. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to put back in the old code, until they get a chance to work on and fix the new code. I'm sure they have a good reason for changing the code, but the old code worked reasonably well, such that it could be used in the interim.

The real fun begins when you try to change to an animation with a transparent background, and it decides to show each frame on the single image :D

  • Got re-directed to here.

Bahhh....a thread that have no solution =_=

    :/

  • Came up against the same problem when I tried to upload an animated gif for the 1t time the other day. Has assumed it was just something I'd done wrong though.
However, this def needs bumping up the priority list again.
