The Three Craws were great- but it felt like they were only on for about 25 mins :(

The bizarre thing about Stephen Frost is that he lives just down the road from me in South East London and I was standing behind him in Budgens a couple of weeks ago whilst he was buying some baccy and a paper. Freaked me out a bit to see him on stage. I thought it might be the cider...

oh also i gained so much respect for noah and the whale when they didn't play 5 years time

best set was probably bon iver, so so amazing. animal collective are pretty much the best band of all time, but i was so disappointed with them ! such a let down, especially as i had relied on them being the best. wilco was dull. emmy the great was good but expected her to play canopies and grapes which she didn't which was annoying. agree with everyone about the andrew bird/bon iver clash, we ran to far out after bon and only catched the last half of the last song, crowd looked amazing though. couldn't see she keeps bees either due to camera obscura clash. gang gang were so much better than i expected, though i think would have suited a night slot at far out. but basically this was a completely wicked weekend, and how good were the nachos @ mexican and the pies @ pieminister! wow.

Three Craws: lovely. Shared part of my return train journey with King Creosote and he had some interesting facts about tartan. I will be about the only one to have enjoyed Animal Collective and found Bon Iver to be far too Coldplay. I wish I'd seen Andrew Bird instead.

He's called Stephen Frost! I had to call my dad on Sunday to find out his name, could not remember it either and it began to really bug me...

Had the best weekend at Green Man. So chilled out and would defo go back there again! I agree that Animal Collective were disappointing. 3rd time I've seen them now and they just don't do it for me live. Too self-indulgent at times. Still one of the best bands in the world. There were some great sets - Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Phantom Band, Dirty Three (v funny), Magic Arm, Wave Machines, Guy in the Herbal Tent doing the dub-harmonica (does anyone know his name?).. but Wilco were by far the best. One of the greatest peformances I've ever seen. Just perfect!

What is the name of that midly funny semi-celebrity that introduced a number of acts on the main stage. His name has escaped me.

In order , then: 1) The weather. At last!!!! 2) Bon Iver. 3) Four Tet. 4) Wooden Shjips. 5) Wilco. 6) Animal Collective. 7) The roaming rotisserie chicken stall. God almighty.... 8) Amorphous Androgynous. 9) Pivot. 10) The Phantom Band. 11) The people. 12) The Yellow Moon Band. 13) Zun Zun Egui. 14) Grizzly Bear. 15) Vetiver. 16) The vibe.... 17) Gang Gang Dance. 18) Beach House. 19) Rodriguez. 20) Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve. Roll on next year!!!!!!!

  • jacob_harris

The best act by far was Bon Iver, then Animal Collective. Gang Gang Dance, Beach House and Wooden Shjips were also all amazing. Such a good weekend.

Oh yeah, and 6 Day Riot.... in fact just the whole thing again. Or even better Green Man 2010.

    August 2009
  • mattywuh

Once again Green Man has left me with an overwhelming sense of euphoria. I love that place. Highlights - poetry at Einstein's Field, Bon Iver, She Keeps Bees, Wooden Shjips, Yellow Moon Band, Trembling Bells, Josie Long... ace festival and loved the new layout. Definitely buying an early bird ticket for next year...

Kind of surprised that people thought Animal Collective were weak. One of my personal highlights, even though the setlist was criminally short on old stuff. Bon Iver and Dirty Three were both amazing, and Peter Broderick was a big surprise.

Really enjoyed it, but some craptacular clashes (and also some annoying people on the campsite who really didn't seem to be there to see bands at all...). I was one of the seldom few who opted to see Andrew Bird over Bon Iver - having seen the latter before and being well aware that the former's set would be far less busy. It was definitely worth it as the Birdman ended up being my second favourite act of the weekend (sandwiched between the amazing Wilco and the less-amazing-but-still-ridiculously-awesome Camera Obscura). The consensus seems to be that Animal Collective were not amazing and I agree wholeheartedly.

  • razzlebathbone

New layout was a massive improvement - why haven't they had bands in the Walled Garden before?! Musical highlights for me were Wilco, Beach House and Wooden Shjips.

  • zennor

Also agree with Animal Collective being very disappointing. Left early for Bon Iver, having seen all the songs I wanted to see & managed to catch half an hour of Andrew Bird but yes, bad clash. I felt a bit like I was super busy with bands on Saturday then didn't have anything to go to on Sunday. Apart from Josie Long- how funny was she?! Loved Grizzly Bear & Errors, & discovered Peter Broderick who was fantastic. Spotted Grizzly Bear wandering around numerous times too which was exciting. What a lovely weekend, can we do it all over again this Friday?!

Enjoyed this years fest more than last, even though the musical line up was probably stronger last year. Animal Collective were a huge disapointment and Sundays line up was rather threadbare imo. But superb sets from Four Tet, Bon Iver, GGD, Dirty Three, Wooden Shjips, The Aliens, Jarvis Cocker and the excellent Literature and Cinema tents ensured there was never a dull moment.

    August 2009
  • SpaceLlama

It was absolutely perfect. The scenery, the bands, the people. Everything! I was very impressed by Dirty Three, Beach House and Peter Broderick, of whom I'd hardly listened to before I went to the festival; I left with an urge to listen to more. My highlight of course, was Grizzly Bear. Agreeing with everyone else; the clashes were painful. Andrew Bird and Bon Iver, Vetiver and Grizzly bear...gah. I will surely be returning next year. How nice was the paella though? Omm.

  • dominijk

the best fest i've been to hands down, only mild grumble would be to ask for longer spots or quicker turn rounds. some stand out sets, agree that animal collective where underwhelming, BSP rocked as ever, fence collective where blinding, chai wallahs is paradise under canvas and i found some fantastic new groups and hope the line up next year is as strong

    August 2009
  • Spider_al

Andrew Bird/Bon Iver was a very annoying clash - I really didn't care about Jarvis and would have much rather seen Bird headline the other tent while he was on. Otherwise I thought this year's festival was okay. Animal Collective were very poor and a fair number of bands were dissapointing - but Grizzly Bear, Wilco, Gang Gang Dance, Beach House and a select few others nearly made up. The stand out set of the weekend though has to have been Andrew Bird - brilliant set and the reverential silence during his encore was amazing. Wish I could have seen Bon Iver as well though!

  • Charactarantu1a

that clash was appalling, can't believe i went somewhere andrew bird was playing and DIDN'T see him. otherwise, unbelievably good weekend. beat 07 and 08 hands down.

Andrew Bird and Bon Iver was the most annoying clash, but Blue Roses/Peter Broderick/ Beach House/ Grizzly Bear/ Bon Iver all in a row was just about the most perfect thing ever...
