clearthought my favorite shows were the national (who i thought put on the best show of the weekend), m83, final fantasy, woman, grizzly bear (though had sound equipment difficulties)... walkmen, frightened rabbit, lindstrom, and flaming lips were also good, also liked what i heard of beirut's set and blitzen trapper... enjoyable weekend
Juli 2009 -

bullfroggreen No, I consider the Jesus Lizard a noise rock band.

greene1994 out of the bands i saw... think it goes something like this (for me anyway). yeasayer/m83 (too hard to decide, both shows were fantastic) > grizzly bear > Lindstrom > Frightened Rabbit (that drummer; my second time seeing them and I'm confident I will NEVER get tired of that drummer) > Flaming Lips > The National > Final Fantasy.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana Do people consider the Jesus Lizard metal?
Juli 2009 -
dogfacedboy yeah, i was hoping for some heavier bands. next year plz.
Juli 2009 -
jsun1216 oh, and doom was either awful or a fake. or an awful fake.
Juli 2009 -
jsun1216 yeasayer killed it; the rain and then sun coming out during Sunrise was an amazing moment. grizzly bear was also great, and The Very Best >>> The Flaming Lips
Juli 2009 -
exvon I wish the sound & production crew weren't doing such a shitty job for Grizzly Bear's sound...They were amazing, but they also had immense sound difficulties...and the flaming lips were somewhat boring, but it was a fun show.
Juli 2009 -
stringcheesey I know. I mean, I guess you could count Fucked Up being the "metal" portion of Pitchfork, but there was no band on the list that had that "edge" I guess. Next year, Pitchfork should try and book ISIS. Or Pelican at least.
Juli 2009 -
MasterODisaster Great, but lacking metal
Juli 2009 -
dogfacedboy probably the greatest weekend of my life.
Juli 2009 -
Ginandjews anyone have mf doom's set list?
Juli 2009 -
itschinatown Ditto on the Lips times 3. The only thing I kind of didn't like was the slowing down of "Fight Test" and "Yoshimi Pt. 1." I kept waiting for the songs to really kick in, and then they were over.
Juli 2009 -
guthriepc Top 3: Yeasayer, Women, Grizzly Bear... Honorable Mention: dj /rupture, tortoise, m83
Juli 2009 -
MysticSushi M83 was great.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana Agree 100% with Ashley. Maybe it's because it was my first time seeing them.
Juli 2009 -
joeZinga it's cool that Jason Biggs and Justin Guarini are both in Cymbals Eat Guitars
Juli 2009 -

Habeef these days the flaming lips are all spectacle and little substance. i'm old, i know it, but i wish you guys could've seen 'em at palooza '94. funnest "pit" i've ever been in... and on pavement on the side stage, no less. no wayne b.s., they just tore through the set like it was their last show ever or something.
Juli 2009 -
letterb I was pretty disappointed with the Flaming Lips.
Juli 2009 -
gingerlinger after the beautiful set of Beirut, my friend and I sprinted to black lips and caught two songs by matt & kim, and then got pushed all the way to the front center of black lips. golden.
Juli 2009 -
R0b0hobo Built to Spill's setlist was more for longtime fans playing live stables like Virginia Reel Around the Fountain, Carry the Zero, Going Against Your Mind, Big Dipper etc. It was one of my favorite sets but I could see how someone who only has an album or two wouldn't like it. Also I don't think car would have translated well in a live festival setting.
Juli 2009 -
LoveYouSomeEric Tyler, I wish I'd have skipped more of the Flaming Lips. Of all the times I have seen them, this was by FAR the worst. Wayne seemed bored, annoyed and uninspired. By the time I decided to jump ship and check out The Very Best, they were on their last song. Seemed like a kick ass set though.
Juli 2009 -
VanaoTX the very chest
Juli 2009 -
LowPulp And wow I'm surprised to see that some people actually saw the Very Best.
Juli 2009 -
LowPulp Best of Show: Built to Spill, The National, The Flaming Lips, Cymbals Eat Guitars. Most Disappointing: M83, Having to miss Beirut + Grizzly Bear. Most Pleasant Surprises: Wavves, Dianogah
Juli 2009 -
TylerDegraaf Built to spill FOR SURE ignored the requests. The Very Best was incredible. I'm glad I skipped the flaming lips.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana So I think we all agree that Write the Night just doesn't work, right? All we got were lame greatest hits sets. It didn't really affect the Jesus Lizard because they have short songs and a relatively small catalog, but all the other bands suffered for it. Except Built to Spill, who I'm pretty sure ignored the requests entirely.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana Best of Fest: Jesus Lizard, Fucked Up, Flaming Lips. Runners Up: National, DOOM, Vivian Girls. Pretty Good: Women, Tortoise, DJ/rupture. Disappointing: Yo La Tengo, Yeasayer, Ponytail. Wish I Had Seen: Grizzly Bear, Walkmen, Thermals, Mae Shi.
Juli 2009 -
PtotheDOdoubleG even if Doom didn't lipsync it was the worst show of anyone there. Monch blew him out of the water.
Juli 2009 -
turntheradioup The crowd during the Flaming Lips was a little more rough than I expected. I got yanked out of front row, (I'm pretty short, you can clearly see over me) and pushed 5 rows back until I was squished between three really tall guys and couldn't breathe. I had to crowd surf out so I didn't die. What I was able to enjoy though, was probably the most blissful moments of my life.
Juli 2009 -

Habeef shame on you people for seeing doom when lindstrom was tearing it up in the trees. my other highlights were the jesus lizard, fucked up, ponytail, beirut, black lips, michael columbia, killer whales and japandroids. surprisingly good sets by cymbals eat guitars, plants and animals and wavves.
Juli 2009 -
itschinatown I find it REALLY hard to believe that neither "Car" nor "Center of the Universe" made the top 12. Hell, I find it hard to believe they weren't in the top 3.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana Pretty sure DOOM didn't lipsynch.
Juli 2009 -
icecrmspiritual I really don't know Doom's stuff that well. I was actually catching Lindstrom at the time. I just noticed that Greg Kot wrote this: Other performers simply phoned it in. One of hip-hop's most inventive voices, Doom (a.k.a. Daniel Dumile), wore his super-villain mask and leaf-sprouting camouflage, but lip-synced his performance, showing none of the spontaneity that a great hip-hop show demands. And in a festival notable for its lack of rock-star attitude (many of the performers mingled with the crowd), Doom brought plenty of his own, showing up at the last minute and demanding to be paid up front, in cash, before taking the stage. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/chi-kot_blog_refer_0720jul20,0,951181.column so it sounded like he may have been behind the scenes or something. He may not have lip syched.
Juli 2009 -
awesomejermaine Whoever wrote the review for the trib saw the show just like we did, so i wouldn't take so much stock in that. Depending on how much you KNOW the songs, and you probably don't, his timing was off at times, and that doesn't happen with original recordings.
Juli 2009 -
icecrmspiritual the Chicago Tribune wrote a review of pitchfork today and said that he lip synched the set.
Juli 2009 -

marillchu789 lindstrøm, final fantasy, the national, fucked up, and the flaming lips (of course) were particularly mind-blowing, though the whole weekend was full of top quality shit. i agree about the sound issues. also, as someone mentioned earlier, it was definitely worth it to hang out all day sunday at the A stage to be as close as possible for the lips.
Juli 2009 -
artstarr9331 did not expect m83 to be such a wonderful dance party, was a definite highlight for me. also, camping out on stage A sunday was a great decision. worth the wait to be right up front for flaming lips.
Juli 2009 -

nuclearpower I have to echo what a few people said earlier: the sound was NOT balanced for a lot of sets... I still had a great time, but I am of the opinion that they should get some different people on the soundboards next year...
Juli 2009 -
rustandcyanide How can someone seriously not tell the difference between lip-synching and actual singing? I thought DOOM was quite awesome. Mew was awesome. The Very Best was awesome. The Mae Shi were quite fun. etc, etc, etc.
Juli 2009 -
PopcornEyeglass anyone have setlists for mew or dj/rupture? those were the huge surprises of the weekend for me.
Juli 2009 -
MysticSushi Doom did not lipsync. That was actually him this time.
Juli 2009 -
MarcoWeirdOh i got bored with the doom set too early... beirut was that feeling you get when you put on new socks... m83 was a dance party set in a french space colony... and the flaming lips were visually stunning even though the songs were predictable... walking out you say to yourself... "I saw the flaming lips and it made me a better person" grizzly bear - Awesome! m83 - Great! beirut - GREAT! flaming lips - GREAT GREAT!!
Juli 2009 -
stringcheesey Very enjoyable weekend, with the exception of sore legs, getting my phone smashed to pieces, and almost losing my car keys. Highlight of the weekend I'd probably give to The Antlers, as it started to rain in the middle of their song "Two." I really wasn't sure how Hospice was going to translate over to a live performance. But they did a great job on it. Absolutely loved the new ending to "Epilogue." DJ/rupture was a big surprise and an amazing show. The guy just waved to the audience, started his set, and put on a brilliant clinic with various styles of electronic and dance. Word of note. Crowd-Surfing, while fun seems to be frowned upon by people in attendance. At least when Flaming Lips are playing.
Juli 2009 -
icecrmspiritual Doom Lip Synched too.
Juli 2009 -
awesomejermaine @jon7bok: You're pretty wrong about that not being DOOM. He actually sat backstage and wouldn't come on until they paid him up front in cash, a pretty DOOM like move. Also, if you've ever seen him in his mask, it looked EXACTLY like him, except with a shave maybe. And yes, M83 was fucking awesome.
Juli 2009 -
meier You couldn't be more wrong if you tried godspeedme. m83 was by far the highlight of the festival. Absolutely KILLED it.
Juli 2009 -
sporadicbanana Yeah, I met the GZA before Vivian Girls. Surreal fucking moment.
