With the additions of two other bands Culture Shock should be starting at noon or shortly after.

WIUX is proud to announce the lineup for the 2009 Culture Shock festival, taking place in Dunn Meadow on April 18, 2009! Previous headliners have included big-name bands like Spoon, Yo La Tengo, and most recently, Beach House, in 2008.

This year’s Culture Shock is expected to exceed crowds of over 2,000 people. Also in attendance for the first time this year will be local Bloomington vendors setting up shop in Dunn Meadow. Expect a mix of art, music, and culture like never before at this year’s Culture Shock.

Listed below are the confirmed entertainers for the festival this year. The WIUX Public Relations team has compiled a preview of information about each act to get you totally amped for April. (All acts are subject to change without notice).

Four Tet

English artist Kieran Hebden goes by the moniker Four Tet, fusing hip-hop, electronic and jazz to create a warmly layered soundscape. Three releases in four years under the Four Tet name and countless remixes to other popular artists give Hebden unique insight into the musical construction of artists as diverse as Andrew Bird and Madvillian. Not restrained to the three minute pop song, releases such as the single “thirtysixtwentyfive” (with a 36:25 running time) proves his ability to break boundaries and celebrates his exceptional personal style. Heralded for his beautiful and captivating live shows, Four Tet won’t disappoint as the headliner to this year’s diverse Culture Shock lineup.

Daniel Bejar (of Destroyer)

Daniel Bejar has spent his career creating poetic and intelligent music with a variety of different indie supergroups. His music contains both traditional pop hooks and unapologetic riffs and choruses. Bejar adds a raw, yet refined twist to the conventional pop scene. Collaborating with The New Pornographers, Swan Lake, and fronting his band Destroyer has given this seasoned performer widespread popularity among a variety of different listeners. His solo performance is sure to be a unique and genre-bending show, drawing from a variety of his experiences with different musicians.

Extra Golden

Extra Golden will be coming to Bloomington after their current tour in England. With Afro-beat infused and laden with tight grooves and dancey anthems, this band has revived psychedelic funk with an accessible global sound. Understandably so, as lead guitarist and singer Ian Eagleson earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in Kenya, and emerged with an understanding of Benga music. Their latest album, Thank You Very Quickly will be released in March of this year, and their performance at Culture Shock is sure to be as fresh as their highly anticipated new album.

Death Vessel

Based out of Providence, RI, Joel Thibodeau heads the act, Death Vessel. Signed to Sub Pop and ATP Records, Death Vessel incorporates many musicians and instruments such as guitars, viola, mandolin, and maracas, among others. Due to the wide variety of instruments used, Death Vessel’s style is very eclectic and has been described as neo-traditional folk. Since their 2008 release of Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us.

Dan Friel

Dan Friel, the front man of Parts & Labor out of Brooklyn, NY, characterizes his style as Garage Rock, and incorporates live electronics, i.e. turntables and FX, into his music. His most recent album, Ghost Town, has been widely praised and is described as an outlier from others in similar genres.

TremFu

TremFu is sure to leave audience members with sore throats and clenched fists after their performance at this year’s Culture Shock. Their live performances are exactly what their name implies: a whole lot of attitude and an onslaught of euphoria. With three albums under their belt, this hardcore quintet is one of Bloomington’s favorites.

Found Objects recent inception in the music scene in Bloomington, IN, has caused a rapid growth of popularity due to their vibrant and unique sound. Consisting of only two members, Dan Morris and Patrick McMinn, their recently released debut album, Habit Down the Day, out on Shut Up! I Love You Records, has given them the rapid notoriety of a band we needed on stage!
