This is true.. It really depends on the distance between the two venues and the band playing at Midnight.. Oh, and just so you know, it gets MUCH easier to get into shows after Midnight.. Most of the 'Buzz Bands' play around Ten, so the crowds tend to thin out by then.. Not always, and again, it depends on the showcase, but it happens..

Cool, thanks. I was also advised that if I wanted to see two bands at one venue at both 9 and 10 pm that I might have trouble being able to get into a different venue by midnight for another show at that time.

Depends entirely on the band / venue.. If, lets say, you wanted to see the Decemberists (big band) at Stubbs (big venue), or even a smaller band that was playing three or four hours before that, odds are against you getting in, even if you showed up at 8:00 for a band that plays at 12:00.. Now if you wanted to see Young Coyotes (a new and mostly unknown band) at Beerland (small club), chances are MUCH higher, even though capacity is smaller.. More people will leave between bands, less people overall will be willing to wait there in line for later bands, so you can probably get there at 9:00 for a band playing at 10:00 and still have some time to relax.. And yes, you'll be able to stay there for the 12:00 band.. In all the years I've gone I've never seen anyone rounding up non-wristbanders to kick them out to make room for wristbanders.. :)

If you're going to something at night, how early do you need to be to get in? Are lines an issue if you're sans wristband/badge? Like one band plays 10-11 and then there's one I want to see at midnight. That is doable, yes?

w3stfa11: Not sure how you define "major show." For all the shows on the sxsw official site you have three options: badge, wristband, or get there early and, if they aren't at capacity, pay a cover (if you like really unpopular artists you can even show up later). The only three exceptions are the totally free Auditorium Shores, Bat Bar and Lonestar Lounge. The majority of unofficial day parties are free subject to capacity, most are listed on places like showlistaustin, sxsw2009.sched.org, do512, etc with info on whether they require an rsvp.

I thought I talked myself out of SXSW in November, but everytime I look at the line-up I have to remind myself that I cannot afford it and I'd probably have an agoraphobic fit even if I did manage to go. But I still really, really, REALLY want to go. Damnit. These stupid festivals always look SO good on paper. Double damnit.
