• Cheese

Mysteriously, a collection of stalls from markets throughout Europe found themselves transported to a town in the west of Scotland today. There was a cheese stall, which was lucky, because I was looking for cheese.

I got some Brie, and a big lump of Swiss mountain cheese, similar to the stuff Ritchie provided for the ATP festivities. I have eaten some of both, but have now run out of oatcakes, crackers or other biscuits suitable for accompanying cheese.

I suppose, really, I should mention a bit more about ATP, what with this being a public record and all. It was great.

It was good fun watching Warren Ellis doing the lean-back-fiddle-like-mad-karate-kick thing on numerous occasions throughout the weekend, and his "Ladies and Gentlemen, this song is about..." announcements were great. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Dirty Three sets. Also great were Grinderman, Low, Papa M and, oooooh, too many to mention.

Warning: Anyone who reads this journal knows I tend towards hyperbole - in life, not just language. And I mean everything I say. But as this was one of the best weekends of my days so far, prepare for even more superlatives than usual...

Smirk as much as you like. I loved it. I confess it induced a powerful nostalgia for psychedelic drugs but only in the best way. The military-width bed reminded me of my university days (sweet times), my full English breakfast was institutionally good, the cheap hand soap in the bathroom was called Out Of Eden, the 24hr shop had tutti fruttis, the pigeons flying around in the big tent... Even the beach was endearingly crap. Everything about the joint and its square lawn and neon signs was just right. Except crazy golf wasn't hard enough.

  • Joanna Newsom Live, Barbican Friday 19th January 2007

I've attempted to write this entry without sounding overly fawning... but unfortunately I couldn't help myself, and I have failed spectacularly. Sick-bags at the ready...

It was incredible, and as always with Barbican gigs, a pretty special night. Something about that venue that always adds a little extra shine on top. I was quite surprised by its popularity. A full-house, and a big snaking queue for returns which I don't recall seeing at the Barbican before. I think the fact that she's featured as a critics' favourite last year, and in the higher reaches of a lot of 'Top Albums of 2006' lists accounts for that.

I won't deny I'm a big fan of Joanna Newsom (and besides, it would be fairly obvious from my profile), and so was always going to enjoy it whatever the weather, but it really was a memorable performance and the feedback I've read so far has been similarly positive. I saw her last year in a much more intimate setting at the ATP festival from just a couple of feet away, where she alone previewed several tracks from Ys. …
