Mr. Gira kept urging us closer to the stage, but security wasn't letting us near the stage, for reasons I never did figure out. They kept telling us there was a weight limit. I think it was because we seemed to be standing on an old orchestra pit that had been sealed over. The hall was an old vaudeville theatre, with a high ceiling and a wide balcony. The stage was brightly lit. The sound system that had been installed in the theatre was aging but quite up to the task. (Although I never strayed far from my spot ten feet from the right center of the stage by Norm, so I don't really know how the back of the house or the balcony sounded.)
