Mr. Gira kept urging us closer to the stage, but security wasn't letting us near the stage, for reasons I never did figure out. They kept telling us there was a weight limit. I think it was because we seemed to be standing on an old orchestra pit that had been sealed over. The hall was an old vaudeville theatre, with a high ceiling and a wide balcony. The stage was brightly lit. The sound system that had been installed in the theatre was aging but quite up to the task. (Although I never strayed far from my spot ten feet from the right center of the stage by Norm, so I don't really know how the back of the house or the balcony sounded.)
The set felt shorter than the one a week before in Chicago...I liked that show more, but mostly because I was with a small, devoted crowd. A good portion of the crowd at ATP were exhausted curiosity seekers, and some were quite drunk and obnoxious. But no matter. This night's performance of "I Crawled" broke my heart with joy. …
