  • Mass Dosage's top gigs of 2011

    8. Jan. 2012, 19:00 von massdosage

In 2011 I went to 16 gigs, the lowest number since I moved to London four years ago. Am I getting more picky or just not going out as much? I like to think the former as the overall standard of what I saw last year was pretty high. Then again, organising two weddings earlier in the year plus a honyemoon might have had something to do with it too. Here there the highlights. All venues are in London, UK.

Black Star, De La Soul and Rakim @ The Hammersmith Apollo
    (Tuesday 10 May 2011)
It took a while for a good gig to come along to kick the year off, but this was it. I arrived a bit late so only got to see Rakim's last track which was a shame as he's been billed many times of late but the gigs have all been cancelled. I've seen De La quite a few times in the past but they always put on a dope show and they didn't disappoint. Seeing Talib and Mos Def together on stage was a rare treat and they dropped classic Black Star numbers as well as loads of their solo joints, very nice.

    Amon Tobin @ The Roundhouse

  • Concert - PJ Harvey & Portishead, 23/7/11

    14. Aug. 2011, 7:26 von Swiss-Nitty

    Alexandra Palace, London

So there we were - after all the anticipation. London, which (after all these years) still feels like my 2nd hometown and PJ and Portishead. There are no words to descirbe the excitement I felt that day! But then I'm not really a festival's person and I don't like to hang around for hours having to listen to bands I don't know... luckily the bunch of friends I went with felt exactly the same way.

For this reason, we found our way far up north rather late. We managed to see a bit of DD/MM/YYYY but apart from that - no other acts other than PJ & Portishead that night.

PJ HARVEY: Well what can I say? It was my first time finally seeing her live and I so thoroughly enjoyed it! Especially since I really like her latest album. She was mainly playing songs from that particular album AND Angelene! One of my faves! Moreover, she appreared to have enjoyed the set really much herself! What a perfect PJ HARVEY concert experience. I was in music dream land - but more was to follow...

Sab 23 Lug – ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror curated by Portishead

My Flickr set with some nice pictures

This was my first time in London! I had a one-week-holiday and I spent the actual sunny days of the week, indoor, to 'I’ll Be Your Mirror' at London’s Alexandra Palace. But it was worth every single minute!
Great people, great music and great location.

I didn't get the traffic system, I think that without it, I would have done half the steps I did, but this was just a detail!

However, I couldn't wait for the Portishead double set, and they didn't disappointed us! Beth Gibbons is a great singer, and there was a great feeling!

The great surprises of the week end were dd/mm/yy (I really liked the background animations '80 videogames style), Beak and GoodSpeed You(it was the first time I saw them)

As a Goldfrapp fan, another performance which I couldn't miss…

Well, I think this was my favourite ATP so far. It's a shame the wristband was plastic, otherwise I would have left it on my hand afterwards just as I did with the Bowlie one.

  • ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror // Alexandra Palace, London // 24.07.2011

Sat 23 Jul – ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror curated by Portishead

The weather in England, as most will know, is unpredictable at best. Ironically, the first time we get any decent weather in almost two weeks, I chose to spend the entire day predominantly indoors at ATP’s new sister event to their Minehead weekends; I’ll Be Your Mirror at London’s Alexandra Palace.

It was day two of the Portishead-curated weekend event. Upon arrival the queues to enter were going round the side of the building; not surprising considering the array of acts playing over the course of the day. As I arrived, the floor to ceiling doors of the West Hall were all shut tight. As they opened, I entered a room darker than a David Lynch film with a tense atmosphere building as Godspeed You! Black Emperor were preparing to start the day’s proceedings day with an unconventional two hour opening set.

The screen flickered with the worn words ‘Hope’ as members of the Canadian noise group made their way onto the stage one by one to open the set with ‘Hope Drone’. …

  • Simply Sunday

We aging addicts have occasionally witnessed live shows that have transcended mere oral stimulation – offering music that stiffened/moistened (delete as appropriate) our sexual organs and performances that permanently stained our undergarments.

On occasions, however, Sunday’s I’ll Be Your Mirror mined far beneath the carnal…

Godspeed You! Black Emperor kicked-off the sultry afternoon with the most potent sounds music can offer. Violin, cello (I think) and every conceivable breed of guitar combined to hypnotise the entire congregation – hundreds of heads rigid one moment, then swinging savagely in unison the next. A stage cluttered with seated, listless figures (the vivacious violinist aside) was married with striking projections that juddered with each clamorous note. No one could wrench their ears, or eyes, away.

Seemingly comparatively conventional, Liars opened with the intricate percussion of

Fantastic - very well organized, iconic setting, great music. Portishead and PJ Harvey were great. Too bad people were not up for MF DOOM, different crowd it seems.
